This week Derek, Deeps and I chat about pancake recipes and Fear Itself; we determine if The Venture Brothers can ever be too nerdy; we get our first real episode of In Plain Sight;  and we get a little behind-the-scenes info about Doctor Who from Aaron at Paperbag Radio!

Then we review two new shows - The Middleman and Secret Diary of a Call Girl. One is quirky fun with charm to spare. The other… has Billie Piper.

And we get very deep when discussing the 1975 Gene Hackman thriller Night Moves. And we announce a special Big Red Film Festival event - Troll 2 vs. Manos the Hands of Fate.

Wow, I thought the AV Club connection was apt before…

Obviously, I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about Troll 2, but I’d say that if you’re going to watch Manos, get the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version.

Well - you did help to inspire this discussion with your insistence that I watch Troll 2. Deeps was getting tired of it sitting next to the DVD player. And we are just stealing the idea - I mean, paying hommage - from the AV Club. Maybe I should email them.

As for Manos - we’re the proud owners of the MST3K version. We got it as a wedding gift many years ago. In fairness, we were registered for it….

Part one of our grand experiment is complete. Derek and I watched Troll 2 while Deeps went to find cranberry-apple juice or something. We even took notes. And next week we watch Manos so the Manos vs. Troll 2 should go up on July 6.

Of course you guys registered an MST3K dvd for your wedding.  Because you’re the coolest couple ever.  Pff, I knew that.

Anyway, Night Moves sounds great, as I too love that phase of the Hackman’s career and “revisionist takes” on (insert the name of a genre that people don’t much talk about today)s.

This may be a silly question, but have you seen Prime Cut, with Lee Marvin, Sissy Spacek and Gene Hackman?  I love the movie, particularly an early interchange between Marvin and Hackman that goes a little something like this:

Marvin: You’re eating guts, you know.
Hackman: I know.  I like ‘em.

Greatness.

I think Deeps wanted to register for towels. Bor-ing!

I don’t think I’ve seen Prime Cut, but I’ll have to take a look at it. When I was a wayward youth I watched bunches and bunches of weird Lee Marvin stuff because my mother was such a fan.

I’m sure Deeps has seen it because a) he’s more cultured and b) he’s smarter. Seriously, sometimes I forget how incredibly smart he is - then he starts talking about the feminization of Gene Hackman (in Night Moves) and I’m like….wow.

Yeah, thaat was actually the part of the review that got me interested in seeing it.  That and all the references to The Long Goodbye.

We caught a revival of The Long Goodbye a few months ago - maybe closer to the beginning of the year. I’d seen it on video but it looked great on the big screen.

Of course, every week Deeps is all “this is just like ‘The Long Good-bye’ because…” And I’m like, it’s cereal. Don’t overthink it.

I kid!
