Caught a re showing of Dawn of the Dead this weekend. Was surprised how much i really enjoyed it! Espically, the bomb in front of the van near the end. All the Zombies falling back in a wave, way cool!

Watching the first season of Night Gallery (“Portifoy!”), the Black Cobra films (Italian rip-offs of Stallone’s COBRA, starring Fred Williamson), and was about to start watching a Japanese horror flick called The Horrors Of Malformed Men. Anyone see this?

Also recently watched a smurfin of a Japanese film called Three Resurrected Drunkards.

I love Williamson’s Black Cobra films. I picked the first one up on DVD for $1, so you really can’t beat that.. As for The Horrors of Malformed men, it’s a damn good movie. I picked it up when it was first released on DVD after years of being completely unavailable, and was impressed. It certainly is off-the-wall. Visually it’s very nice, and features several solid performances. With that being said, it really isn’t about the acting though or the story(which is all over the place, and full of holes); it’s about the experience of viewing this film. I don’t know anyone else who’s seen it yet, so I’d be interested to get your opinion..

Apparently the fourth Black Cobra film only includes Williamson in stock footage, and it was directed by Umberto Lenzi! I only have the first three, and I can probably live with that. The third movie was tolerable, but the second was the most fun since you had Nicholas Hammond (who played Spider-man in the 70s TV show) as Williamson’s partner.

I’ll try to get some thoughts up on Malformed Men. It certainly sounds like something that would appeal to me.

Been a layabout today and watched some eurocrime flicks (wot a shock):

Date for a Murder:  dir. Mino Guerrini.  About a PI who runs into an old friend, who then leads him into a plot involving spy hijinks and murder.  It was fun, like a lot of late 60s films, the hairdos and outfits are fantastic.  It also had one of those cool, jazzy film scores from Ivan Vandor, who did the score for Questi’s Django, Kill…If You Live, Shoot! and Antonioni’s The Passenger.

Mad Enough to Kill (aka Evil Trap):  dir. Yves Boisset.  Marlene Jobert is released from a mental institution to be the new governess for a wealthy businessman’s nephew.  Tomas Milian plays a brooding and intense hitman, who kidnaps the two.  A focused and fast-paced plot w/good characters made this one a lot of fun.

The holy grail of today’s viewing:  Machine Gun McCain:  dir. Giuliano Montaldo.  Starring John Cassavetes, Peter Falk, and Gena Rowlands, alongside eurocult faves Britt Ekland, Luigi Pistilli, and Florinda Balkan.  Cassavetes plays a psycho ex-con who w/the help of his estranged son becomes involved in a plan to rob the new casino in Vegas.  Peter Falk plays the gangster who’s running the joint.  The film is unusual to see some of the finest American filmfolk in such an exploitive gangster picture.  God bless them for it.

Before I nod off, I’m going to pop in HK, 80s horror classic The Witch From Nepal w/Chow Yun Fat.  I love HK horror from the 80s.  Late.

Quickies:

Dark Floors (Lordi Horror Film) = Forgettable.

[Rec] = very cool

The Cottage = awesome, fun, a great time watching this

Botched = okay, campy silly fun movie

The Worst Horror Movie Ever Made = SHIT!!!

Teeth = great cast, great acting, great direction - a great movie

Brutal Massacre = See it.

Werewolf in a Women’s Prison = hard up for nudity, see this, otherwise the JC Penny Catalog would save you time and money (although Yurizan Beltran is gorgeous and naked).

KARAOKE TERROR = Crazy Japanese film that is silly, wacky, violent and pure f’ing awesomeness.  A buyer - if you are a fan of this kind of off the wall extreme japanese cinema.

Hans:where do you get all of your euro-crime stuff? I find it really hard to track a lot of it down..

LBJ:I’ve wanted to see Karaoke Terror and Girls rebel force for a while now, and it’s good to hear positive things about them..

As for my recent viewings, I had my 11 yr. old nephew with me for a few days, so I was a little limited in what I could watch. With that being said, we did get in some good genre viewing though. While grocery shopping, we found Garbage Pail Kids: The Movie for $2.99, so we picked it up and watched it right away. I hadn’t seen it in probably close to 20 years, and it held up pretty well(but then again fart and snot gags usually don’t go out of style), we then watched Jewison’s Rollerball, which he liked, but was a little bored by the non Rollerball sequences, we then ramped the awesomeness up to 11 and popped in Hands of Steel directed by “Martin Dolman”, this movie is a combination of Over the Top and the Terminator, with a sprinkle of Road House for good measure. I picked it up for 25 cents on VHS and it was EASILY the best 25 cents I’ve ever spent.. After that we watched a Ninja Theatre film(hosted by Sho Kosugi, of course): Little heroes of Shaolin, which has some very impressive Kung-Fu from the youngsters in the film. I was stunned at the amount of children that get killed on screen though; it’s gotta have the record.. After that, I capped off our movie marathon for him with Big trouble in Little China(which he loved). I love converting the youth of today…

OMG, the best find ever!  I love this movie and have the VHS as well.  Here’s my take from the old “Currently viewing” thread:

Sergio Martino’s Hand of Steel—Daniel Greene (who’s latest acting credit is “Waiter”) plays a cyborg who leaves behind his assasination programming to discover himself in Arizona.  He meets a pretty lady at a truck stop and defeats the tri-state arm-wrestling champion in a rattlesnake match.  John Saxon sends Claudio Casinelli to hunt him down.  That’s all right, because he’s a cyborg, OK?

BigWilly—if you want to see eurocrime or a lot of cool, obscure stuff, you’ll have to track down some dvdrs.  PM me if you want a list of sites that sell them or I can copy a bunch of them for you, maybe.  Late.

This weekend I’ve had my 9 year old nephew over so my time will be mainly filled up with playing video games and watching kung fu flicks which I’ve got him into. So I got him to watch Master of the Flying Guillotine and Forbidden Kingdom. I’d not seen either but I loved Flying Guillotine and it was really nice to hear what my nephew liked about it, he just loved the mix of characters and action, not a dull moment for him. He also liked Forbidden Kingdom but I wasn’t that impressed, it was nice to see all the well known characters in one movie i.e. drunken immortal, bride with white hair and the monkey god but it just didn’t have the grab I thought it would but at least it wasn’t as Hollywood as I thought it might be but I didn’t really want that kid in the story, I found him quite annoying really..

Tenebre: Was pretty good, but I zoned out in the middle. Argento’s stuff if becoming very formulaic.

X-Files: Boring and un eventful

SPOILER start:

Scully without much incentive drags Mulder back into the “life” he is hiding pout from, and then spends the rest of the movie emphatically pushing the point that this not HER life anymore. I never thought I would say this, but what a bitch!

SPOILERs Done…

Dark Knight: Excellent! It jumped around quite a bit, had a few false ending moments, that made it seem to drag on a bit. Nevertheless, all was worth it.

I totally understand this sentiment.  Here’s a couple that I couldn’t finish after recent viewings:

The Ruins:  I managed to watch about 2/3s of this one.  I’d read the novel, which was mediocre to mildly-entertaining.  Scott Smith’s novel benefitted from a huge push from his publisher.  The movie was awful.  My favorite thing is how the characters are selectively intelligent:  at some points, they know to do the exact right thing at the exact right moment and at others, they act as if they have a sudden onslaught of brain damage.

Shutter:  The Thai original was fairly decent.  I was pretty much tired of the “ghost girl,” creepy horror flick, but it was an okay movie.  Now what’s up w/ the remake?  Why is it that regardless of the film being remade, all the remakes turn out to be the same?  I only got about 20 mins into this one.  Totally awful—but the joke’s on me, I still give all these films a chance.

Watched Ching Siu-Tung’s the Witch from Nepal, starring a pre-Better Tommorrow Chow Yun-Fat.  It’s a movie about the oft-told story of a mortal man falling in love w/a supernatural woman.  This time Chow, while on vacation w/his girfriend in Nepal, catches the eye of a Nepalese witch, who becomes infatuated w/him.  Ching would go on to make the legendary HK classics, A Chinese Ghost Story series and the Swordsman series.

I’ve become over the last year a huge fan of Alain Delon.  Watched Georges Lautner’s Someone is Bleeding.  Delon plays the attorney to Mirelle (Weekend) Darc.  Darc is embroiled in a mystery, involving murder.  She is pursued by an infatuated and naive t.v./screen-writer.  Typical and easy-to-see plot twists ensue.  A little bit of fun to be had here, but the twists are v. easy to predict.

I watched the remake of Cape Fear last night. I saw the original a couple weeks back.
I loved the original but felt the remake was only decent. I’ve realized I don’t like Juliette Lewis
all that much. I also realized how much I like Robert Mitchum. I might watch Night of the Hunter
in a couple days.

Watched Lost Boys:  The Tribe.  This love letter/homage/remake/parody of the original film is a mixed bag.  There was quite a few clever bits mixed in w/the stupid gags.  I thought that they would feature a female as the center of the story, but like Jaime Gerz in the original, she was pushed more to the sidelines.  Incidentally, she looked a lot like Danielle Harris.  It also looks as if they wrote in Corey Feldman as an afterthought.  One-time fun flick.

Watched Doomsday on dvd, another love letter, this time to Carpenter, Cameron, and Miller.  Hyper-violent and fast-paced but ultimately forgettable.  The lead, also incidentally, looks a lot like Kate Beckinsdale.

Also watched Miike’s Crows Zero, a high-school violence flick.  Miike’s done umpteen manga adapations and high-school violence flicks.  This is one of better ones:  shot on DV w/excellent fight scenes.  It’s moved into my top favorites from him.  If your a fan of Miike, check this one out.  This one won’t convert you, if you’re not already a fan. :)  Late.
