I thought the creepy video covers list was a terrific idea. I remember well a few covers that I could barely look at in the video store when I was growing up.

1) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II - I didn’t get that it was a reference to The Breakfast Club until *years* afterward. But even if I knew that it wouldn’t have changed the fact that people wearing rotting flesh as masks wasn’t something I saw everyday when I was six.

2) Dario Argento’s Creepers - I was a big Labyrinth fan as a kid, and seeing the star with half of her face eaten off by insects was no fun at all.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v394/Manos99/creepers1_op_583x800.jpg

3) The Company Of Wolves - I think every video store around the area where I grew up had this video box, and it never failed to freak me out. Heck, even the avatar someone has on the board creeps me out a bit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v394/Manos99/B00006G8H301LZZZZZZZ.jpg

4) The Making Of Michael Jackson’s Thriller - Yeah. I know. I couldn’t even get through the video when it came out (I was five), and the box just had a bunch of the zombies standing around Michael Jackson.

5) I can’t remember the title, but it’s a picture of a woman being dumped into acid and three quarters of her body was stripped away to the skeleton. Hmmm..

Honorable Mention: The Dead Pit, since it had the creepy light-up eyes on the box.

I forgot all about THE DEAD PIT, good post.  I still love Box Art and there were so many great covers in the 80’s.

As far as Summer type movies - I see this one as a cult and have to spit it out there, because it was always one of my faves - UP THE CREEK.  Honorable mention - Poison Ivy with Alex P. Keaton (aka Teen Wolf/Micahel J. Fox) and I think it was Jo from Facts of Life too that was in there.

I remember a movie called Demon Wind with a VHS cover that was one of those weird images where you tilt it and the image changes. It started out as a window and then the image becomes some big demon smashing the window in. I rented the movie for that alone (I was a kid what can I say. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t still do that occasionally). Anyway, from what I recall the movie was basically a really lame Evil Dead ripoff and I don’t think the monster from the box cover even showed up in the movie.

As far as summer movies, my ultimate will always be Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter. It was the first night of summer vacation and my dad let me stay up late and watch that all by myself. It was the first “real” horror film I ever saw and the love affair officially began that night. I still remember him telling me “you turn that off if it gets too scary.” Didn’t happen.

I can’t remember offhand, but are the young folks in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre on summer vacation?

One more (semi-obvious) freaky video box. The first time I saw Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBIE it had a black and white VHS cover that looked exactly like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v394/Manos99/ZOMBIE.jpg

Just a combination of that one freaky zombie head, and the WE ARE GOING TO EAT YOU! tagline was enough to freak me out a little.

Though, my favorite VHS box art of all time was for the film ELIMINATORS

God, I need to somehow track down a DVD of that.

Eliminators looks like it may very well be the greatest movie ever made… How have I not heard of this?

It introduced the term MANDROID into my vocabulary.

I must have watched that movie twenty times when I was a kid. I think even then I knew it wasn’t great, but every time I saw the VHS box I just had to watch it again.

The whole thing is actually on youtube if one cares to watch it that way (*cough* http://youtube.com/watch?v=-y5f0bp0Mus *cough*)

The obvious movie not yet mentioned that has creeped me out since my parents took me to see it and still haunts me every time I go to the beach for summer vacation is Jaws.

I remember that cover!!!  I just have no idea if I ever actually watched it.  I know for a fact that I wanted to.

Great list Manos! As you can see, I am a big fan of Company of Wolves and the cover always did freak me out.  Creepers is also a great pick and would have made my list if I had seen the cover as a kid/teen.  I saw the cover and rented it right away when I was in my twenties.  This and Suspiria helped mold me into the Argento fan I am today.

I also wanted to add that the cover Bill described as the Alice, Sweet Alice wasn’t the cover I saw.  The one you described is really creepy, but this is the one I saw:

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n193/kookiebish/ALICE_SWEET_ALICE.jpg

Brrr.  Awesome movie, by the way.  I wanted to dress up as the killer for Halloween and some year I may do it.

Oh, since I know Ryan doesn’t come to the forums, be sure to show him that as that is the correct cover.  Plus, it’s an excuse to get him to look at the forums. =P
