Yo!  So The Het mentioned in an email that he had a few suggestions for the fest and wondered if I was going to post a thread where people could give us stuff like that.  Well you can.  And it’s here.

Nothing’s out of bounds, really.  Just assume that we haven’t seen anything and we’ll sort through it all.

Cheers,

Miles

Waco: Rules of Engagement is awesome.
Anything by Erroll Morris is great.
Kordavision about the guy who killed Che is good.

Murderball may be my all time favorite documentary.

Here are some of my recommendations for docember:
Tarnation -This film has the most disturbing images ive ever seen. Scary!
American Dream -A doc about busting up a union at a hormel meat plant.
Dig!  -The battle between the brian jonestown massacre and the dandy warhols.
Overnight   -Troy Duffy is the biggest ahole in the world!
Hearts of Darkness   -Coppola’s struggle to film Apocalypse Now.
and finally
Paradise Lost and Paradise Lost 2 -Story about the west memphis three. I am the only living being who thinks they did it.

Oooh - these are good lists.

I saw Dig! and thought it was fascinating and sad. Sometimes Errol Morris screens his works in progress at the Harvard Film Archive and he showed his last movie there which Deeps really liked a lot.

I will second the Het with Overnight and Hearts Of Darkness.

I would recommend:
In The Realms Of The Unreal- fascinating look into personal psychosis..
Grizzly Man- just sad and somehow poignant
Harlan County U.S.A- as I live in Kentucky
Hearts and Minds- maybe the best Vietnam Doc ever made…
The King of Kong- like this one alot
Crumb- probably my fav Doc of all time…
Go Tigers- high school football doc..very good

American movie is a great one as well, and My Brothers Keeper is pretty great….so much to choose from…

DIG! was really good…...love that film….

We actually did an episode on Overnight a few months ago.  I think maybe I ought to repost that one, seeing as how everyone seems to love it so much.

These are all great by the way.  I’ve seen and love a good portion of these movies and the ones that I haven’t seen sound intriguing.  Speaking of which, what does everyone think about Capturing The Friedmans?  That’s maybe one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen (and something I’d really like to talk about on the show).

I love Capturing the Freidmans but this was one of those docs that had so much footage of the family it seems like it was forced. I mean, who videotapes their family that much?
Another good doc is Watch Me Jumpstart. Its about one of my favorite bands, Guided By Voices and their genius frontman Robert Pollard.
The other great doc and the first one I ever loved is Roger and Me. I am not a big fan of Micheal Moore but this one is great.
I agree with Samurai on Harlan County USA. I dig films about the little man going against corperate america.
Wal Wart:The High Cost of Low Price is good also.

I found a half eaten Big Mac in a storage bin in a Wal Mart once.  My friend also bought a machete there while we were camping, which turned out to be a lot of fun (the machete, not the camping).

I think they’ve banned the sale of machetes in Massachusetts after several unfortunate incidents.

Anyway - congratulations again on completing the Spooktacular and making it through 31 movies. You guys were tough and pulled it together and I couldn’t have done it but I enjoyed listening. Good job!

I’m looking forward to Doc-cember. What’s going on for November? You guys probably need a theme-free month to decompress.

Here are some of the docs that I’ve had in my queue for a while now and that I’ve been interested in for a while now:

Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One
A documentary about the documentation of the documentation of the making of a film.  And no, I’m not kidding.

Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man
I love music docs and I’ve heard really good things about this one.  Don’t know how interesting it’d be for the group or the show though.  Does anyone know if the story extends beyond a simple bio?

Mau Mau Sex Sex
A film about “The Sunshine Boys of Smut.”  Need I say more?  Yes?  Frank Henenlotter makes a cameo.  Nuff said.

No End In Sight
A highly acclaimed doc about our current situation in Iraq.

Little Dieter Needs To Fly
The basis for Rescue Dawn.  The Het might actually like this better as it doesn’t included Steve Zahn.

Deliver Us From Evil
Another recent doc about pedophiliac Catholic priests.

The Exodus Decoded
That James Cameron hosted doc about finding Jesus’ bones.  Is it not mentioned very often because it sucks?  Does anyone know?

I Like Killing Flies
A doc about an eccentric restaurant owner.  Could be good.  Right?

The Day After Trinity
An Oppenheimer doc.

Harlan County, U.S.A.
I’m with you guys on this one.  Haven’t seen it yet, but I’m dying to.

The Real Dirt on Farmer John
This one sounds amazing.  Hippie commune faces farming crisis and leader is branded as a Satan worshipper.  Am I wrong or does this sound awesome?

Girl 27
A major film studio wrapped up in a rape case?  Could be good.

Crumb
Never saw it.  Dying inside for not having done so.

Strange Culture
There was a section of this included in an issue of Wolphin a while back and it really piqued my interest.  Here’s the synopsis: On the eve of his new exhibit, artist and professor Steve Kurtz was shocked by the news that his wife had died of heart failure. The medics on the scene became suspicious of Kurtz’s artistic media, which includes genetically modified foods, and the FBI accused him of bioterrorism. This disquieting true story is brought to life by actors Tilda Swinton, Josh Kornbluth and Peter Coyote in Lynn Herschman Leeson’s chilling dramatic documentary.

The Times of Harvey Milk
Been meaning to see it for a while now, and with Milk on its way, I can’t think of a better time.

The Weather Underground

Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room

Grey Gardens
I don’t think we should watch it for the festival as it’s the least narrative doc I’ve ever seen, but if you’re interested in watching two members of the Onasis family loon it up around their rotting mansion, then this is the flick for you.

Also, Man on Wire is smurfin brilliant.  Have I mentioned that lately?
