I realize this isn’t necessarily horror related (unless your top five bands are all horror-core, horror-punk, horror-billy, horror-polka or something of the kind) but I’m a musician and dammit there’s not enough music talk on here so I’m going to indulge my whim and ask for everyone’s top five bands. Feel free to discuss. Here’s mine (in no particular order except for the number 1 spot).
1. They Might Be Giants (fav album “Apollo 18”)
2. The Toadies (fav album “Hell Below/Stars Above”)
3. Rasputina (can’t pick a fav album but “Gingerbread Coffin” is
my fav song)
4. Primus (fav album “Frizzle Fry”)
5.The Pixies (fav album “Bossanova” not a popular choice among Pixies fans but in my opinion the highest amount of quality material among their collected works.)
1. Les Claypool (Anything he’s in is awesome.)
2. Phil Collins (I grew up on Genesis.)
3. Incubus (Their older stuff is better, but they’re newer stuff is still dynamic.)
4. The Mars Volta (Experimental, progressive, insane.)
5. Coheed and Cambria (They’re like crack for my ears. I can’t explain it.)

Great choices! Obviously the Les Claypool thing dovetails with my own list. Me and Blair (yes I know it’s grammatically wrong, I prefer the sound of it) once went and saw Incubus live. It wasn’t that great of a show actually—it wasn’t that they didn’t play well it’s just that they played so exactly like the actual recorded songs it sounded like they were playing along to a cd, no deviations or covers and it was all about Brandon Boyd removing his shirt over the course of 3 or 4 songs, slowly. Still, I went and saw them because I do like their music. Privilege is a great song and I love Warning. And yeah, the Mars Volta is so utterly unique…to be honest I can’t really pop it in and just listen to it…I would have to be drawing or trying to create something to have that on BUT I do find At the Drive In very listenable. I realize that that project is heavily watered down with more terrestrial sensibilities but it still holds a lot of the MV flavor. Mars Volta Ultra Lights to use a smoking analogy. *HIGH FIVES*! Now who else wants to jump into this shark tank???
1. The Killers
2. Toadies
3. Poe
4. They Might be Giants
5. NSync (I’ve got no excuses)

OOPS!! That was me. Not Kelley.
Although Kelley does love some Justin Timberlake.
Thanks for outing me publicly babe. Still, I’ve got no problem saying that “What Goes around Comes around” is a great song. Just cuz I groove to Sepultura doesn’t mean I can’t groove to JT.
Remember when we saw Poe and her electronic stuff didn’t work? Still, she’s great! She supposedly won back the rights to her masters from her record label (Capitol I think maybe)...still no new music. BOO!
Glad to see the love for TMBG. It’s nearly impossible for me to narrow down just five, and I’ll probably regret it as soon as I hit Submit, but I’ll give it a go. I guess to qualify for the list I have to like the bands consistently over a long period of time, and they have to have almost no songs or albums that I dislike.
1. The Eels (I think E is one of my favorite songwriters ever. Hard to pick a favorite album, but their latest “Blinking Lights and Other Revelations” is as good as any.)
2. The Flaming Lips (“The Soft Bulletin” is probably my favorite.)
3. Radiohead (“Kid A” & “Amnesiac” especially)
4. Barenaked Ladies (once you move beyond their couple of radio hits, they have a great catalog, and are awesome live)
5. They Might Be Giants (I don’t listen to them as often as I used to, but they probably had as much effect on my overall musical tastes as any band. Hard to pick a favorite album, but “They’ll Need a Crane” is one of my favorite songs.)
(It’s hard to imagine that Ben Folds, Pink Floyd, Beastie Boys, The Cure, and Beck didn’t make my list, but I’d be hard-pressed to bump anyone off. Guess they’d be 6-10.)

I love all the bands on your list except the Barenaked Ladies and I don’t particularly dislike them, they’ve just never really crossed my radar except for the song “Alcohol” which I love. The Eels are one of those bands that nobody knows that’s who sings the sad song in the movie that makes the whole scene so poignant. I only have “Beautiful Freak” and “Electro-Shock Blues” but I’ve heard stuff spanning their whole career. the song “Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor” (which I think is about E’s sister) is a heartbreaker. As for “They’ll Need a Crane” that is a great song. The bridge part “...don’t call me at work again oh no…” is one of the greatest breakdowns in any song. That album “Lincoln” was a close second to Apollo 18” for my fav. It was the first tape (cassette tape) I ever bought back in the eighth grade. It changed how I looked at music. YAY! I love this thread (claps like a seal, not a mentally challenged person). Also, the flaming lips, have to say that “Clouds Taste Metallic” is probably my fav. Love Placebo Headwound. And of course Radiohead ah God I love ‘em all!
Bossanova is my favorite also. I would say the song Dig For Fire is in my top 20 all time songs.
I’m glad somebody else is with me on this. So many Pixies fans are like, “Ugh, that’s when they started selling out!” but I disagree. It’s no softer or more well produced than stuff on Doolittle and honestly I don’t see how well produced makes you a sell out. I think the stuff on Bossanova is the weirdest and most offbeat of all the albums. I love “Is She Weird”. It’s my fav off of that album but the whole thing is solid from beginning to end (I don’t really care for “Stormy Weather” but it’s not bad, just not as strong as the rest).
Of course I do like all of their albums, even Trompe Le Monde which seems to be even more despised than Bossanova.
Corrosion Of Conformity
Clutch
Mike Patton and his many insane implementations..
Fireball Ministry
High On Fire
Opeth….
What are ya gonna do I am an old school metalhead….and these just roll of the tongue first….but my iPod has about 10, 183 tracks on it….so I like a lot….eh?

I was never much of a Barenaked Ladies fan until I saw them live. They have a very good stage presence and are incredibly together as musicians during the show. It prompted me to look more into their music, and find that they’re much more than “One Week” or “If I had A Million Dollars” or “Alcohol” (which I agree is a great song).
Oh man, I can remember wearing out my cassette tape of “Lincoln” (although I was in high school at the time). Whenever I listen to that album I sometimes still get flashbacks of cutting 7th period with my friend Jason and driving my 1971 Toyota Celica with the boom box in the back seat blaring “Ana Ng”. Good times. TMBG is one of the first bands I “discovered” on my own, and over the years I’ve spread the word to lots and lots of people, and I’ve seen them live 7 or 8 times in about 5 different cities, including a Tower Records in San Francisco and a car electronics show in Atlantic City.
My list of favorites is always changing(with only Kate Bush being a constant), but for now:
1) Kate Bush (Never For Ever or The Dreaming)
2) Tori Amos (Scarlet’s Walk)
3) Rasputina (Frustration Plantation)
4) The Cure (Staring at the Sea)
5) Kokia (aigakikoeru)
My top five changes all the time, but here’s what I’ve been listening to lately:
1. Nine Inch Nails (The Fragile and Year Zero)
2. Megadeth (Cryptic Writings)
3. Mastodon (Blood Mountain)
4. Dream Theater (Octavarium and Systematic Chaos)
5. Oingo Boingo (go ahead, name an album)
