I know I’m kinda late to the party, but I thought I’d throw my current top 5 in:
The Police (Synchronicity) - Easily the greatest band ever assembled. The only band to incorporate Reggae into their sound and not have it fill me with rage (I’m looking at you, 311 and all you other frat rock retards). Sting and the others played with themes of obsession and isolation and presented them with such simple beauty that they almost make such pains atractive. Sting’s solo work leaves me torn, because he slowly went Stevie Nicks-crazy, but his sound hasn’t suffered a bit.
MC Frontalot (Nerdcore Rising) - He’s got amazing flow, especially considering the subject matter he’s dealing with. Anyone who can come up with a rhyme about being pissed on at a Star Wars Convention, and still make it as smooth and effortless as an early Common track deserves some recognition.
Jonathan Coulton (Where Tradition Meets Tomorrow) - Another master of making the absurd sound absolutely beautiful, Jonathan Coulton could easily go straight and have a wildly successful pop music career. Skullcrusher mountain could easily be a hit with the kids if they didn’t pay attention to the lyrics. If nothing else hit up his music store and pick up Re: Your Brains (or Re: Vos Cerveaux, for the Frogs out there). It’s a must for the discerning Horror fan/office worker.
The Postal Service (Give Up) - The only bad thing about this one-time team up is that Jimmie Tamborello’s beats were such a perfect home for Ben Gibbard’s emotive voice, his work with Death Cab (another of my regular plays) sounds out of place, plaintive, and discordant at times.
Journey (Frontiers) - Corny, I know. Shows my age, I know. However, it is hard to deny the power of this San Francisco ballad band. They are the band every loves, but no one will admit to loving. We all know the words to Don’t Stop Believin’. Faithfully comes out of the DJ’s speakers, and you instinctively look for a slow dance partner. They perfected the art of the Power Ballad, effectively destroying it. No one will ever make another. No one will ever need to.
