Speaking of music… today, I got hard copies of Devils in My Details, by ohGr, and The Shadow Out of Tim, by The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets.

In no particular order

Queen
Coldplay (who I’m seeing in September)
Keane (who I’m seeing next month)
Muse
The Killers

Because of my Dad who shaped my music tastes when I was growing up I have to mention Genesis, Pink Floyd and The Who which I still listen to, but not as much as those listed above.

If I could expand my list to 10, I could just tack your list onto the bottom of mine.  Especially Muse.  Thoughts of a Dying Atheist is the most awesome song evar.

Wow… I completely forgot about Iron Maiden. Those guys definitely belong in my top five.

I feel honored Chiz - Muse are incredible (Newborn and Plug In Baby are my favs) and they are on the list to see live at some point now that I have tickets for Keane and Coldplay. I’m suprised you’ve heard of Keane though.

I remember picking up Muse’s “Showbiz” several years ago when it came out and being blown away by it.  It’s weird, I’ve sort of watched them change and grow and I still like them but sometimes I miss sort of the old, smaller-sounding songs to some of the more recent, super-produced stuff.  Don’t get me wrong I still really like it but nothing has gotten to me quite the way “Muscle Museum” did 8 or 9 years ago.  Though Newborn maybe is pretty close.  Still, they are a great band.  I don’t understand why people say they’re copying off of Radiohead because other than being dramatic rock bands from the UK I don’t think they have too many other similarities.  Maybe in a vague way.

NOTE: I’m not just saying this because The Sleep is sponsoring this month of NOTLP. I mean it.

If you’re a fan of Portishead, you need to check out The Sleep’s new album “Never in a Million Years”. It is very good. That is all.

Is anyone else here a Splashdown/Universal Hall Pass fan?  I got into Splashdown several years ago when I heard their song “Ironspy” on local alternative radio and then I subsequently downloaded everything I could find.  Then I found the singer, Melissa Kaplan’s, new project Universal Hall Pass’s album “Mercury” and actually paid for it and I have to say it is one of the most amazing albums I’ve heard.  It’s just beautiful and sad and unique and her voice is amazing.  I just can’t believe this album didn’t do better.  I had to track it down to an online pay website that i’d never heard of cuz it wasn’t available any longer at any of the major ones.  It’s really good.  Very jazzy/electronic/piano-y weird…just solid, quality music.

If you like jazzy, electro piano-ish music with haunting female vocals, you should check out Lisa Germano. Her sound “Hard Wood Floors” is awesome.

Freddy, everyone is trying to recover from X-mas. It’s just mean to entice spending on good music.

Okay so since this thread’s been around a few weeks now I’m gonna go ahead and post my 2nd string top five—aka the 2nd half of my top 10…in no particular order

The New Pornographers

The White Stripes

Metallica (minus Load, Reload and St. Anger and with disdainful acceptance of the black album)

Splashdown/Universal Hall Pass (I count this as one band for the purposes of this list)

Fergie     (just kidding it’s Nirvana)

What’s wrong with The Black Album? I thought it was a perfectly good album.

As for post-Christmas indulgences, Seventh Son of the Seventh Son will soon be mine. Sweet.

Compare ANYTHING prior to Metallica’s black album and you’ll understand the disdain.

‘7 deadly sins, 7 ways to win, 7 holy paths to hell and your trip begins…’

Piece of Mind and Number of the Beast are my favorite Iron Maiden albums.

Still need to get Piece of Mind. But yeah, love Number of the Beast.

Powerslave and Number of the Beast have always been my two favorites.  Love “Aces High” and I even enjoy the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (I think it’s spelled rime and not rhyme) even when it gets overlong and slow.

As for Metallica and the Black Album.  I’ll kind of echo DZ’s sentiment by saying; taken by itself, if you had no prior knowledge of anything Metallica had done beforehand it would be a pretty great album but considering everything that came before it it fell WAY short.  Master of Puppets, in my opinion, is probably the greatest Heavy Metal album of all time and if not the greatest Heavy Metal at the very least the greatest Thrash Metal album of all time.  I love Slayer but Reign In Blood just isn’t quite as strong (many people have stated that “Reign in Blood” is the greatest thrash album of all time…it’s not even my favorite Slayer album).
