I never fully understood all the sub-catagories of metal, meaning I never considered Metallica thrash, though I think Megadeth is an example.
I always felt Kill ‘em All is the most amazing first album ever put out in metal. Usually Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets duke it out for favorite Metallica album in my head. Sometimes Lightning wins, sometimes Puppets.
I never got into Slayer. It might be that in my high school experience the douchiest metalheads exclusively wore Slayer shirts. Guilt by association I guess.

Anybody have favorite progressive bands?
I can see how the douchiest of headbangers could be big Slayer fans but I also enjoy them. Hate the douchey headbangers.
As for Prog bands, I used to be really into Rush, saw them twice. I still have a special place for them in my heart and still enjoy them but haven’t really listened to them much in the last few years. If you consider Jethro Tull prog then they would probably be my favorite prog rock act. I also really like Dream Theater, or rather, like Rush I used to really like them and still think they’re good but haven’t listened to them much in the semi-recent past.
Jethro Tull is definitely a candidate for prog, though more on the mainstream side.
Have you listened to Genesis during the Gabriel days? That’s some stuff so unfathomable it actually turns off parts of my brain in trying to figure it out. I love Phil Collins, but when Genesis replaced their lead singer with their drummer they shifted to a more consumable product.
Listened to Master of Puppets this morning, and I gotta say, I think I know what you guys are talking about with The Black Album. It pales in comparison. I also got some CDs at Borders today (including Piece of Mind and Motorizer).
Oh geez.. pick only five?? Cripes, for someone like me who’s a music junkie as much as she is a movie junkie.. (and part-time DJ with incredibly eclectic tastes.. ) Narrow it to five? Yikes.. Okay, I’ll try to pick some different bands I love from different genres..
1. Information Society (Original InSoc, not this V2.0 stuff.)
2. Rasputina (Gotta love the Cello)
3. Switchblade Symphony
4. Detroit Cobras
5. The Creepshow
(6.) Boiled in Lead
I could go on and on and on about all the music I listen to.. but good lord, I’d be typing all day.. Oh, and Kelley? Universal Hall Pass? Just got one thing to say.. “Ring of Fire.” OMG. Gods, what a voice. I should definitely get more UHP and I’ll have to check out the Splashdown stuff.. I saw Rush live twice in Chicago.. Vapor Trails tour and I think the one after that.. Good shows, both. Saw Jethro Tull live here in the hometown at our labor day “On the Waterfront” Festival.. more great stuff.
(Honorable mentions fall into 80’s/classic rock/goth/industrial/techno/punk/celtic/comedy genres and are waaay too many to list..)
I don’t know if you caught my first top 5 but Rasputina are on that list so every time someone mentions them I have to high five. Everything about them is inspiring.
Yeah UHP’s version of Ring of Fire is really great. There’s a song on their album Mercury called “No One” that is one of the most haunting, affecting songs I’ve ever heard. It’s beautiful and I’m not scrrd to say it’s moved me to tears a couple of times. I definitely encourage you to check out Splashdown. There are several sites where you can download all of their stuff for free and since they’re broken up they actually encourage this (also because their label shelved their album and wouldn’t release it). I think if you wiki them it provides a link to one of these download spots.
In no particular order
Queen
Coldplay (who I’m seeing in September)
Keane (who I’m seeing next month)
Muse
The Killers
If I could expand my list to 10, I could just tack your list onto the bottom of mine. Especially Muse. Thoughts of a Dying Atheist is the most awesome song evar.
I feel honored Chiz - Muse are incredible (Newborn and Plug In Baby are my favs) and they are on the list to see live at some point now that I have tickets for Keane and Coldplay. I’m suprised you’ve heard of Keane though.
I used to have a third shift job, and I trolled Atom Films and YouTube alot when I was there. I happened across a recording of ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and fell in love right there. That’s also how I found Regina Spektor, who I recommend to everything with ears.
The way Frank sings Catholic Girls is so damn catchy. Wet T-Shirt contest is pretty awesome too, but these songs fall under comedy more than straight music for me.
“All the Catholic girls, the kind you bring home to mother.”
