have you not seen Kane yet Emily? if not, move it right back up the list, I implore you!! Severance was good though eh?

I know, I know. It’s just hard to keep Citizen Kane high on the list when titles like Switchblade Sisters, Punisher 2, Mulberry St., and Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter keep appearing.

Severance was an absolute blast.

I intend to watch:

F For Fake
King of New York
Kundun
The Bird with Crystal Plummage
The Man With the Golden Arm

I would like to revisit Barry Lyndon, a film I detested when I seen it, due the charisma vacuum that is Ryan O’Neal. But everyone loves it, and I love most of Kubrick’s other films.

Wilson, I may be in the minority, but I think King of New York, is a loud, dumb film that has occasional moments. I dig Ferrara, and Walken, but think this one gets sucked off by people too much.

It has been bought and is sitting ready to be watched along with 70 others, hoping to get to it sometime in the next month.

I am not to versed in Ferrara, he is a bit of a blindspot for me, I have only seen 3 or 4 by him. What do you think is his best couple of films?

well, I’m certainly not an expert, but of what I’ve seen, here goes:

Driller Killer-mediocre

Ms.45-good rape/revenge film

Fear City-solid sleazy, killer on the loose film with an interesting cast(Tom Berenger, Billy Dee Williams, Ola Ray, Melanie Griffith, Rae Dawn Chong, Maria Conchita Alonso)

King of New York-you know what I think.. worth a watch though..

Bad Lieutenant-good film thematically with a great performance by Keitel(and his cock)

Body Snatchers-haven’t seen, but Sammy digs it

The Funeral-his best film in my opinion. standout performances for all leads, esp. Vincent Gallo(I get the feeling we talked about this before)

New Rose Hotel- so-so film with good leads(Dafoe, Walken, A.Argento). Worth seeing if you dig Ferrara

Just to coattail on Will’s thoughts on Ferrara (who I enjoy very much), one of my favorites is The Blackout w/Matthew Modine, Claudia Schiffer, and Beatrice Dalle—a hauntingly depressing film.  The Addiction is a fantastic, B&W film w/Lili Taylor and Christopher Walken, Ferrara’s take on vampires.  Finally, I saw Go Go Tales, w/Dafoe, Asia Argento, and Modine.  It’s set in a stripclub and the film looks terrific, but the story is confused and boring.  Late.

I didn’t know Dalle was in a Ferrara film. That is serious f*cking insanity. I’ll have to check it out

I like both Bad Lieutenant & The Funeral (as we discussed on another thread). I did not like Driller Killer, was quite underimpressed by the film.

The other Ferrara film I have seen is The Addiction which is an excellent film, vampire mythos is beautifully handled, the film has only one major problem - the awful soundtrack and the poppy love song used.

I should give more attention to Ferrara, but the problem is, I truly despised watching The Driller Killer so now I’m stuck imaging his character in every one of his directed films. I liked, not loved Body Snatchers. It’s definitely ranked third out of the four installments (well above the squandered potential of The Invasion).

Oh, and perhaps I should proudly announce that I did complete my major resolution of 2009: I finally watched Citizen Kane. Yes, masterpiece, blah blah blah. Certainly worth a viewing and I’m actually glad I saw it at this point in life when I have enough film knowledge to appreciate it a little more.

I finally got around to watching King of New York.

The film is an interesting mess, it has a number of brilliant scenes - the robbery on the train car, Walken dancing, - and a great performance from Chris Walken, he has a reptilian face and his blank eyes have never been used better than in this. However, both Chris Walken’s performance and the character of Frank White deserve a better film. The plot seems abandoned after about 45 minutes, and it is very choppy throughout; the exterior cinematography is wonderful but the interior cinematography looks like an early nineties TV show. David Caruso was as bad an actor in his heyday as he is now, his attempt at intense was frankly embarassing.

I reckon I would give it 6.5/10

I enjoyed it, but there are significant problems throughout.

WICKED. So glad you got a chance to see it Em. It is quite a technical marvel for it’s time isn’t it? Especially the cinematography and makeup. It’s a shame the Rosebud reveal is so pervasive in pop culture, I wondered how I would have responded had I not known.

in agreement with all you said(esp. the early 90’s tv show camera work and set). I always find it interesting to see leading men in early loud buffonish side kick roles ala LARRY fishburne in this and De Niro in Mean Streets

I never really thought about this being an early Fishbourne role because he was in Apocalypse Now back in the 1970s, but you are spot on.

On another note I love De Niro’s performance in Mean Streets, he is electric in the movie.

yes, Fish had been around, but this was with some screen time and lines(no, Cowboy Curtis doesn’t count). I always get a kick out of seen Fish so young in Apocalypse. De Niro is great in Mean Streets, it’s just odd to see him as the young loose cannon, not the older, cool headed higher up, which is what I became accustomed to
