Pickleloaf, I don’t know if you listen to the Mondo Movie podcast but Dan and Ben asked for some suggestions from Bollywood movie fans and they picked overwhelmingly this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Sholay-Dharmendra/dp/B00009W8OZ/ref=cm_lmf_tit_1

They did a review of it on one of their shows.  I’m sure it’s in their archives.

As for my two cents, I went through a phase where I watched a bunch of them.  There are an insane amount available on Netflix.  Anyhoo, I kind of stuck to the Indian reduxes such as the Bollywood Fight Club, Zinda (Bollywood Oldboy), and the Bollywood version of The Eye.  I can’t really remember the names of any of them.  I also watched a film which was a lift of Reservoir Dogs/Usual Suspects.  What’s really bizarre about most of these titles is that they were really dark and violent, and then all of the sudden, these hardcore badasses would breakout in the sweetest song-and-dance that you’ve ever seen.

Mondo Macabro, the US label, released a the Bollywood Horror Collection Vol.1 and Vols 2 and 3 are forthcoming.  Vol. 1 is mucho fun, and Vol. 3 is to contain the Bollywood Nightmare on Elm Street.  I posted about it somewhere here on the CD boards.

After Slumdog, expect a lot more Bollywood films to hit these shores.  Late.

If you have comcast they have a whole Bollywood section under the premium channels section…I has like 15 movies and also has a little music section. Some of the movies sound very interesting, though I haven’t found the time to watch any of them yet but will try to check out a few eventually. Only shitty thing is it cost money…$12.99 for a month which isn’t bad I guess if you watch all of the movies. You can also suggest films to them to be added to future schedules which is kinda cool. Here’s a link to the details and some of the movie descriptions with previews.

a few years ago i used to work at an independent movie theater here that once a month would have a group completely rent out one screen on a saturday morning and do a bollywood film. i always had to work during them, so i never got to see them, but they were almost always completely sold out

(my town here in NC has a big indian population for whatever reason. we have some awesome indian restaurants and markets as a result)

it’s funny, the movie theater went out of business, and a group of 6 indian business men and women (some of the same group that put on the monthly saturday morning bollywood) bought the theater and opened it again. now they show bollywood and other indian films all the time, but i always go there to see everything else. (there are 6 screens total)

i’ve been interested ever since, but never really taken the time to look into it. i thought about it again last night so i wanted to see if anyone had suggestions. slumdog’s dance sequence at the end piqued my interest as well heh

Indian food is good,..but if you watch an Indian movie no matter what type,..then you better expect at least 1 song and dance number, lol.
I am living in the UK at the moment and there is a huge Indian population here, and 4 Indian channels on tv, the funny thing is that even the 2000 + movies all have a 70’s or 80’s feel to them, lol.The national dish for England is called ..Chicken Tikka Masala, its brilliant, spicy chicken in an spicy creamy sauce, served on basmati rice, with naan bread, and pupadums, with mango chutney and onion salad…..damn, im gonna have to order one up now just talking about it.
Also recommend trying
Chicken Korma     (MILD)
Chicken Jalfrezzi (HOT)
Chicken Vindaloo   (VERY HOT)
Chicken Faal     (VERY VERY VERY HOT) i dont recommend you try this!!!
Seekh Kebabs     (starter)
Peshwari Naan     (Sweet bread with almonds, honey, sultanas)
