Something Weird boasts the following regarding Blood Freak:
The World’s Only Turkey-Monster-Anti-Drug-Pro-Jesus-Gore Film!
Enticing, I know.
Well, this is one wild trip. Blood Freak begins with a nonsensical narrarator speaking of life, god, drugs, and debauchery. I’m not too sure what his point was as I was far too distracted at the narrator himself; who appeared to be a vagabond of sorts and spoke on a pseudo-intellectual level at best. The narrator pops in and out sporadically and drones on and on—certainly adds to the absurd nature.
Herchell, the main character, finally succumbs to smoking a bit of grass after much protest, and of course becomes terribly addicted to the ever so menacing MARIJUANA!. To satisfy his new-found addiction he finds work at a turkey farm. A turkey farm that also experiments with turkeys on a hormonal level. Herchell becomes a guinea pig as the scientists coerce him to eat some experimental turkey in exchange for some grass. The turkey has some adverse effects upon our unlikely drug-fiend and as a result he becomes…well…a turkey. A blood sucking turkey. A blood sucking turkey that needs to satiate his addiction by sucking the blood of other drug addicts.
So, this hulking turkey sneaks around and about, killing various dope-fiends in a rather simplistic fashion of slicing their throats and shoving his beak into their laceration. There is also a memorable scene of Blood Freak (!) sawing some poor chaps leg off with a circular saw. After this night of mass-murder, the effects of the hormonal turkey wears off and Herchell finds himself back to his normal self…no thanks to Marijuana!.
The implications of this movie are really quite extraordinary. Apparently fronted by Christian fundamentalists, they really drive home the point on how marijuana can effect certain individuals to become helpless, convulsing, addicts of the most extreme nature. Sadly, I’ve yet to see anyone become addicted to marijuana but I guess that’s what makes this propaganda much more memorable and absurd.
It would be hard to recommend this movie as there is a lot of needless filler, and the killing doesn’t start until the 60 minute mark. A lot of rants and lectures regarding drug-usage and its effects on society. Still, where else where you ever come close to finding a propaganda film of this magnitude? ( besides Triumph of the Will of course ;) )
