I just saw Massimo Dallamano’s What Have You Done To Solange?. Massimo is more well known as a cinematographer for a great deal of older Italian movies, including A Fist Full of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More.

A student from an all girl Catholic school witnesses a murder while romancing her teacher, however their need to conceal their relationship stops them from coming forward and generally complicates things. As more bodies appear around the teacher, his quest to find the killer uncovers the seedy underbelly of the student body.
This movie is great. As you can see from the trailer, its a stunning film. It takes the opposite approach to most frenetic, hyper-color giallos by setting a mood with a soft color palette and having more of a focus on solid composition. This softer approach really contrasts with the brutal violence and buttloads of nudity that are present. This is all accompanied by a score by the great Ennio Morricone which does not fail to impress.
It still has problems. The film has a very strange pacing, and feels ridiculously slow at the start. The dialog is questionable too, which sometimes seems plain retarded. At times, you can’t help but think that some more care taken on the script would have elevated this film to being a masterpiece. I’m not sure whether its just the character or the actor, but the teacher (played by the usually solid Fabio Testi) seems to have a large iron rod up his ass for the whole movie.
Despite all of this, I can’t recommend this movie enough. The Italian DVD is region free and has a far superior transfer to the US one, which apparently is quite rough. GET IT!
