I just saw Massimo Dallamano’s What Have You Done To Solange?. Massimo is more well known as a cinematographer for a great deal of older Italian movies, including A Fist Full of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More.

Trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuUUrSVeuQI

A student from an all girl Catholic school witnesses a murder while romancing her teacher, however their need to conceal their relationship stops them from coming forward and generally complicates things. As more bodies appear around the teacher, his quest to find the killer uncovers the seedy underbelly of the student body.

This movie is great. As you can see from the trailer, its a stunning film. It takes the opposite approach to most frenetic, hyper-color giallos by setting a mood with a soft color palette and having more of a focus on solid composition. This softer approach really contrasts with the brutal violence and buttloads of nudity that are present. This is all accompanied by a score by the great Ennio Morricone which does not fail to impress.

It still has problems. The film has a very strange pacing, and feels ridiculously slow at the start. The dialog is questionable too, which sometimes seems plain retarded. At times, you can’t help but think that some more care taken on the script would have elevated this film to being a masterpiece. I’m not sure whether its just the character or the actor, but the teacher (played by the usually solid Fabio Testi) seems to have a large iron rod up his ass for the whole movie.

Despite all of this, I can’t recommend this movie enough. The Italian DVD is region free and has a far superior transfer to the US one, which apparently is quite rough. GET IT!

I love it. One of my favorite giallos. It has a nice blend of by-the-book thriller mixed with Argento styled surrealism. I’ve been bugging the dudes to cover this since the show started. And if they finally do, I demand to be on so I can ramble non-stop about how ridiculously attracted I am to Cristina Galbo. Oof.

Also, I have the Italian DVD you are talking about. I agree, if you have a PAL player, by all means pick it up. The transfer is amazing, the restoration was actually funded by Mr. Tarantino himself. I guess that dude is good for some things nowadays after all. Avoid the Shriek Show release, it has a muddy interlaced transfer.

KINDA SPOILERS BUT NOT REALLY

I would have to agree with you, this giallo is definitely one of the better ones I’ve seen. Its just such a beautiful movie, full of beautiful women too. Cristina Galbo is fine, but really so is every other girl in this movie (almost all of whom you see nekkid). It definitely takes the trophy for the most knife in vag action. I think that the reason the teacher was so still and lifeless was because his beard was on the brink of exploding with awesomeness, and the slightest movement could have set it off. What a head of hair!

Solange is a great giallo and one to watch to get people started on watching the films. I would love to hear CD, OTC or NOTLP’s take on the film.

Has anyone seen it’s sequel? What have they done to your daughters? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072007/

It’s called a sequel but I’m not sure how close it is to the original.

this one wasn’t my favorite… but i thought the payoff was pretty damn cool.

despite some pretty brutal killings, i still felt like this was a pretty slow burn. i would like to have seen more obsession by the non-cop guy involved in the storyline, as a lot of these movies seem to be prone to steer toward

it didn’t exactly feel like an italian flick. but maybe that’s because it takes place in london?

anyone else think this actor below sucked donkey cock? jesus he was annoying

solange was annoying too.

I’ve seen it and it’s pretty cool, like a giallo/eurocrime hybrid.  Daughters has giallo-like murders and motorcycle chases.  Good times.  There’s an unofficial trilogy of schoolgirl murder movies w/this one being the last:  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077505/.  All are fun.  Late.
