I’ve been looking forward to this for awhile. I’m glad it landed in Tim Burton’s lap because for a while Marilyn Manson was going to do American Mcgee’s “Alice” and I thought that would probably not be so awesome. I’ve always loved AIW (who hasn’t really?) and have done quite a bit of wonderland inspired art (again, what artist hasn’t) so I’m really excited about this. I’m a pretty big Tim Burton fan, I’ve loved everything he’s done except for Planet of the Apes (at which I fell asleep). I’ll keep my eyes out for more stuff about this…can’t wait for a trailer.

I pretty much agree. I’m definitely interested to see what Burton does with the material, if only cautiously excited.
Marilyn Manson is, however, working on a film about Lewis Caroll (directed by and starring him, of course). Not gonna lie, I’m kind of looking forward to that as well.
Just a side note and maybe you already knew this but I find it interesting…Lewis Carroll was at one time on the lists of suspects in the “Jack the Ripper” murders. He wasn’t really seriously considered but he was on the list (with a couple of other notables whom I can’t remember now).

He liked little girls. A LOT.
Joseph Merrick was another suspect, purely due to his looks, of course.
And yeah, Lewis Carroll was pretty much a total freak.
Since I skipped Planet of the Apes I can honestly say I’ve never seen a Burton film I didn’t love. In fact, Sleepy Hollow has become an October tradition in my home. But I was weirdly ho-hum when they announced he was doing Alice in wonderland. I guess I thought “he could do that in his sleep.” But I’m much more excited now. It looks like it’s going to be much more twisted and dark and less live-action Disney movie. Also, I’m watching season 1 of In Treatment which features the actress playing Alice. She’s really talented so that also bodes well.
I would really like to see Tim Burton return to the world he created in Beetlejuice for another film. It seemed deep enought to mine more material from.
Lewis Carroll was a total druggy - my Mother told me that at, like, age 6.
And this film looks AMAZING - the acting talent in it is to die for.
To be fair, I think that the connection between Lewis Carroll and hallucinogenic drugs is actually mostly myth and conjecture based on the imagery of the books. The thing is that in the sixties, when that connection was made, the drugs that were being used weren’t really available in Lewis Carroll’s time or weren’t widely used in English society (like psychotropic mushrooms and LSD)...Opium was widely used as well as cocaine and laudanum though and some of the allusions in the book might stem from that but the Jefferson Airplane idea of Alice’s neck growing long translating to “being high” is sort of a pop culture urban legend.
He WAS however almost certainly a pedo-phile. He took lots of photos of little girls naked and was probably in love with little Ms. Alice Liddell for whom he wrote the Wonderland stories so, he was effed up, but probably not a druggie.
Although I guess I don’t know for sure, I wasn’t there. ; ’ )
Ah yes Kelley, I bow to your “smarts” - I checked his wiki and found no reference to drugs there. As I said, I was only going on the word of my Mother - I’ll believe nothing that bitch spouts from now on!!
I kid, of course.
I’m sure I read a book with Lewis as a character in love with Alice…but I cannot remember it.
Burton fans…...you liked Willy Wonka? and Batman Returns? Other than those 2 turds, the guy has a good record for me. I thought Apes was ok until the end, personally. Mostly cause Roth was too damn intense to be ignored.
Is there any connection to American Magee’s Alice? It sure seems like it, but there is no mention of that game in the articles that I noticed.

I love Batman Returns, and I enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when I first saw it. Not sure how I’d feel about it now.
Me and Zac fully agree on a couple of movies here because, yeah, I love both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Batman Returns…I thought it was the best of the pre-Chris Nolan Batman movies. I thought Catwoman in that movie was a great character, crazy, sexy, and sad. It was the sad that really got me. And the penguin was so over the top repulsive, he still makes me squirm a little when I watch…I mean, yeah the army of penguins was kinda silly and when they “bury” him in the underground pool but apart from that I loved everything about it. (bit ‘o trivia: Andrew Bryniarski of “Who Wants to be a Tortilla” fame plays the son of millionaire Max Schreck in this movie).
And Zac, I didn’t mean to make you think I was just slappin you down with knowledge…your Mom is far from the only person who thinks that…in fact most people think that and that’s who I was really directing that to…everyone…I just used your post as sort of a jumping off point to do my own “The more you know…” NBC public service announcement (which being from the UK now Canada I’m not sure you’ve ever seen). I know how silly this sounds but Miley Cyrus, in some magazine article, said that “Alice in Wonderland” was “perverted” and all about drugs and sex and that just burns me up because it wasn’t really meant to be that. I mean, I think it’s cool to take those themes from the book that lend themselves to that interpetation and re-imagine them that way, I love the song White Rabbit and I love all the Return to Wonderland and Beyond Wonderland comics and all the dark art based on them BUT originally it was just an absurdist story. Again, I don’t doubt that the writer’s intentions were less than honourable (trying to win the affections of a little girl for his own possibly disgusting ends…and to be fair, it’s still not known if he ever did anything…J.M. Barrie was suspected of pedophilia with those peter pan boys but that has been hotly disputed by that family themselves…people just like to assume that adults who have associations with children are pedophiles, it’s that whole “believe the worst you can” thing) BUT the story itself is not “perverted”. I’ve been sort of fuming about Ms. Cyrus’s comments ever since I read about them and this was sort of my chance to soap box it. Like I do.
