So I was watching the film “May” which stars Angela Bettis, and if you haven’t seen it (you should) it’s main theme is “obsession”. Then I realized that I have a sort-of obsession/love of Angela Bettis, I’ve seen most of the films she features in and really like her. That got me to thinking what other female actors I like a lot: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Crystal Lowe, Amanda Seyfried, Kristen Bell, Sandra Bullock, Angela Lansbury, Heather Matarazzo, Sheri Moon Zombie…Angelina Jolie (but everybody likes her, and if you say you don’t you are lying).

Oddly enough, I cannot think of any male actors that have struck me as “amazing”, everybody loves Tony Todd (I myself, cannot see why)....I mean, I like Danny Dyer, Sid Haig (frown all you like, I would “sex” him in a hot second)...Lucas Grabeel.

But looking at my DVD collection, I cannot remember the male leads - so what I’m really asking is:

- do you have an “obsession” with any actors (& when I say obsession, I don’t mean a “stand-outside-their-house-at-midnight” obsession, I mean a “buy-any-film-on-DVD-featuring-them” obsession)?

- do you think that male characters/male actors are short-changed in horror films, making them boring, generic or unmemorable for some reason?

Me and my honeybear will buy anything with:  Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Cameron Mitchell, John Phillip Law.  Needless to say, we own some stinkers.

I’ve also got a stalking type obsession for Stephen Geoffreys (yes, even now), so I’m very sad that he brushed you all off.

Can’t say I’m obsessed with any one actor. I tend to focus on directors and writers.

Harrison Ford is my obsession by any definition of the word, but his horror movies list is not the drive here. He has a couple though “What Lies Beneath” & “The Possessed” (1977).

More horror focused: Right now I could watch ANYTHING with Jensen Ackels or Ryan Reynolds ! (WOW)

I have been obsessed with some strange horror actors that I got over VERY quickly: Mark Patton had me in tears for Jesse in Nightmare on Elm Street 2. The same with David Naughton of American Werewolf in London. Then there was Dan Aykroyd of Ghostbusters (don’t judge me!), Peter Berg of Shocker, etc.

Older movies… Lon Chaney Jr. hands down.

Did I mention Ryan Reynolds????

Hell yeah Ryan Reynolds! Loved him in Blade Trinity and he’s one of the best things about the Amittyville remake.

As far as actors in horror movies I think I’m with Tonyhex on following directors more than actors. However there are actors outside of the genre that I will go and see a movie just because they’re in it. Anthony Hopkins is one of my fav’s and I suppose he is a genre actor as he’s Hannable Lecter, but I love him as an actor and will watch anything he’s in. Jason Issacs, (he was in Event Horizon, but I’m pretty sure that’s the only horror movie he’s ever been in!) Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Gerard Butler, Johnny Depp and Richard Armitage are probably the actors I “obsess” over, but I’m not sure I really do that - I just love them as actors…and they’re pretty hot too he he he

I like Johnny Depp and Cillian Murphy and Christian Bale.  Blair likes her some Jeremy Sisto.  I used to really like Desmond Harrington but I haven’t seen him in anything since “Love Object”.  He’s probably doing something and I’m just not aware of it.  And Zac, couldn’t agree with you more on “May” one of the best little indie horror gems out there.  In fact, I think it sort of kicked off the new wave of quality, character-driven indie horror movies that get an audience once they’re on DVD (and I’m not sure it ever even had a theatrical release).

May is excellent :D

Am I the only who doesn’t “get” the Ryan Reynolds thing? All the gays and girls seem to love him, he seems like the poor man’s Jim Carrey to me….

I completely agree. I don’t get it either.

Jim Carry is slapstick physical humor. He can only pull off serious roles by the skin of his teeth.

Ryan Renolds is the good looking guy that can make you laugh! He can turn a non-comedic role out w/o problem (IMHO).

Could Ryan Reynolds pull of Liar Liar as well as Carrey did? NO WAY.

Could Carrey have done so well in Amityville Norror? Nope!

My spouse compared them to Cheve Chase and Robert Redford, and that seems pretty close if you compare acting chops and stiles.

And don’t even get me started on looks! ;)

Oh my god! How the hell did I forget Cillian Murphy! He’s an amazing actor and he’s very attractive - those eyes and cheek bones - beautiful!

May is an amazing movie - sad and strange and I only saw it because Kelley mentioned it on a very early show - so glad I did.

Ryan Reynolds could be a poor man’s Jim Carrey if JC were in anyway attractive…which he’s not. RR is hot and funny and can also act. JC is funny and can act too, but you could say that about a lot of actors couldn’t you?

Yeah, the only horror-associated actor I’ll follow to anything is Bruce Campbell. And hey, sometimes it leads to a really cool non-horror genre movie, like Running Time.

Outside of horror, I have 20+ DVDs for Jack Nicholson, Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, and Humphrey Bogart. For actresses, I’ll watch anything with Barbara Stanwyck or Kate Winslet.

- Cillian Murphy is probably the one typical crush I have, his eyes are gorgeous. It’s even better if he’s acting COMPLETELY CRAZY.

- Mikenstein, have you seen “The Woods”? Bruce is in it!

No, I haven’t, but I’ll have to check it out. I liked May a lot, so I’m cool with giving another Lucky McGee movie a go.

I did a review of “The Woods” for STVRR a million episodes ago.  I don’t want to ruin it for you and I think by all means check it out but it didn’t impress me.  It was beautifully shot to be sure but it was no where near as “together” as May was.  Really beautifully shot and directed though.  And even very well acted.  The story just seemed to be kind of muddy.  He and Angela Bettis worked on a companion piece to May called Roman, in which Angela Bettis directed and Lucky McKee starred as the psychologically broken outsider.  I haven’t seen it yet but it sounds interesting.  If you find it and watch it, let me know what you think.

I quite liked The Woods, but I probably haven’t seen all the old movies it is similar to - therefore it seemed great to me. The storyline was okay, the production was very pretty though. I think you should watch it, Mikenstein.

Kelley, I am desperate to see “Roman”, IT’S GOT KRISTEN BELL IN IT!!

Yeah, I’ll have to check it out—thanks for the recommendation, ZaceryNova. And Roman sounds really interesting too, Kelley. I did a little looking, and Roman looks like it’s a pretty cheap DVD purchase. I think it was only $5 to buy it on DeepDiscount (plus they’re doing their 25% off deal right now). I might just have to order it.
