We’re working on another spooky slumber party games episode (see Episode 101) for Friday the 13th. We need ideas! We’ve done Ouija, light as feather stiff as a board, and Bloody Mary. What else is out there? Let’s scare the shit out of Andy!

Oh, and we’ll probably still play with the Ouija board some more. Questions?

How about we hear some scary stories?

I imagine you wouldn’t want to play “self mutilation truth or dare”?

I love that you guys read my freaking mind. I was just listening to that episode a week ago, totally in love with it.

The only scary game my friends and I played as kids was Bloody Mary so you’ve covered it already, but we used to hold a candle, which is pretty freaky. I still try not to look into mirrors at night.

I always get creeped listening to regional legends. The English major in me is floored by the oral tradition (zow-oh) of the whole thing, and the level of detail lends it such an unsettling authenticity; that something is as specific to have place names, especially when you’re familiar with them, makes it so much more real. I have to turn my iPod off when you guys talk about stuff like that, then sleep with the magical ghost-repelling quilt over my head.

Also, if you can get your hands on the video board game “Nightmare” or “Atmosphere”, they’re a lot of fun with some great jump scares.

Murder in the dark needs 5+ players.

Sort through a deck of cards and remove:

-the jokers
-3 kings
-3 aces.

Deal the cards out one by one to each player until the whole deck has been dealt. The person with the ace is the murderer, the person with the king is the detective, the rest are witnesses. Nobody tells anyone what cards they got. if by chance someone got both the king and the ace, you start again.

Turn off all the lights in your house and spread out. Try and make the rooms as dark as possible, ideally pitch black.

Everyone kinda hobbles around as best they can, exploring the house trying to find murder victims.

The goal of the murderer is to kill the detective.

When the killer runs into somebody, he pretends to kill them with his fingers. He can poke them like he’s stabbing them, slit their throat with his fingers, whatever he wishes. The victim appropriately acts out the death, making appropriate death noises like gargling on blood or screaming. The victim then collapses on the floor.

When the detective is murdered, he places the king card on his chest and the game is over.

When a witness stumbles across a dead body, they yell “MURDER IN THE DARK!”. When this happens, everyone still alive heads to the room the cards were dealt out in and turn on the lights.

Next, the people still alive sit together, and the detective interrogates them. When the detective feels confident enough, he makes an accusation against someone. That person shows their cards. If they are the killer, the detective gets his man and wins the game, if not, the murderer gets away with it and wins.

Winner deals out the cards for the next round.

I thought about the Murder in the Dark game, but figured there are only a handful of us so it wouldn’t be all that suspenseful.

I am supposed to be researching a local spooky legend for the show. But I keep getting distracted by this.
