Ok, I love Rob Corddry. Even with that annoying little patch of hair that sits right at the front of his mostly bald head. But I just can’t get in to his new show Winner on FOX. Apparently, it’s from the same person who created The Family Guy, which I adore. But, in my opinion, Winner is a total loser. (Sorry, I just had to make that pun, no matter incredibly self-apparent it was.)
For those of you who haven’t seen it, it’s basically 40-Year Old Virgin in a sit-com format, and instead of the main guy having actual guy friends, he has a 10-year old friend instead (even though FOX describes him as a “teenager,” the actor they cast totally looks like he’s 10). Rob Corddry’s character still lives at home, finally has his first job (at a video store, I think) and the only friend he has is a 10-year old boy. It’s painfully unfunny and at times just incredibly awkward, like the the episode I watched last night, where the 10-year-old tells Rob Corddy that he should go to a Korean massage parlor to practice sex...so they go, and the kid waits outside. It wasn’t funny, it was just...weird. If that wasn’t enough, Rob Corddry’s character was practicing sex b/c he thought he was going to get to “make love” to his 10-year-old friend’s mom. Eek.
Maybe I’m just not getting the humor. I love Family Guy, but maybe there’s something to the idea that hyberbolic, politically incorrect sarcasm may work better in animation. Or maybe Rob Corddry’s off-the-wall, slightly awkward humor worked better with political satire on The Daily Show.
Has anyone else watched the show? Have any thoughts?
