I know that small-fry little indie The Break-Up opened today, but there’s some other stuff that’s out now (or up and coming) that may not grab your attention right off.

Recommended:

Twelve and Holding—Opens today in NY/LA/Chicago, wider release next Friday. Interesting and humorous and genuine, and by all accounts well-reviewed across the board. Only a few critics that I’ve seen have disliked it, and their blurbs make me wonder if they saw the same movie I did.

An Incovenient Truth—Forget the cliché about Al Gore’s presence. Forget politics. This is by all accounts a top-drawer documentary in an age where documentaries are actually pretty solid pieces of filmmaking. Edutainment, without the part where it’s lame.

Who Killed the Electric Car?—Releases 6/28. What first seems like a mildly interesting but ultimately boutique documentary-style question becomes an examination of the psychology of American business, and hints at the great question of What Could Have Been, not just for us, but for the course of 20th century history. Can you imagine how differently middle eastern politics would have played out if we didn’t need oil to run our cars? Like Truth mentioned above, Who Killed the Electric Car? is slickly-packaged entertainment that manages to be equal parts fun and instructional while never resorting to preaching.

I went and saw it this past weekend, and it does live up to the hype. It’s essentially a lecture and power point presentation, but it’s done so well and so prettily that it doesn’t FEEL like a lecture.

I was walking out of the theatre when I heard someone say “Al Gore’s propaganda,” which mystified me. What, exactly, is he propagandizing here? He doesn’t have a product to sell or a profit to turn. And for a variety of reasons—personal health, stabilization of troubled areas of the world—conserving what oil reserves we have and seeking cleaner fuel sources just makes sense.

Now I want a Hybrid.

Oh good. I was hoping it wasn’t another Michael Moore styled film, but oh well, the right-wingers will poo-poo any earth-conscious message.

And that’s really sad, isn’t it?

Yes, it is very sad. I cannot understand the mentality that says conservation is a partisan issue, and further, that it belongs to the liberals. Conservation.. sounds familiar, root word, conserve.. also the root word for.. conservative.

Go figger.

Tivo grabbed ‘Cry_Wolf’ and we just sat through it. Not the best horror movie I have ever seen, but we quite liked it.
