I never understood the double standards.  It’s like you’re giving people of the same ethnicity/sexual preference carte blanc to demean themselves.  If it’s not ok for people outside of that group to say certain words, then it really shouldn’t be good for that group to use it.

Have you heard his podcast?  It’s really good.  But he calls people ‘stupid faggot’ all the time.  Is that ok just because he’s gay?

I think that’s something to be handled within the gay community. If there are any gay or lesbian people out there that take umbrage with his use of the word faggot they should talk to him about it. All I can say about it is that I think Faggot is a hateful word just like Nigger, it is not innocent or innocuous and has one use, disparity. I have a gay friend that says it all the time because he thinks it’s funny. I asked him once why and and he said it takes the power away from the word. I disagree but really it’s none of my business. Just like how I think a man that isn’t the father of a pregnant womans baby has no say in what she does, but that is neither here nor there.

If Maya Angelou had gone public saying how upset Imus comments had made her I wouldn’t be having this conversation.
In fact I’m done with this thread, you people have gotten enough of my brilliant mind for free, from now on it’s .99 cents a minute.

I think Jason Whitlock really sums up the whole arguement in this paragraph.

“I don’t listen or watch Imus’ show regularly. Has he at any point glorified selling crack cocaine to black women? Has he celebrated black men shooting each other randomly? Has he suggested in any way that it’s cool to be a baby-daddy rather than a husband and a parent? Does he tell his listeners that they’re suckers for pursuing education and that they’re selling out their race if they do?”

Imus is an ignorant man but he’s not the anti-christ that the media is portraying.

It was Imus’ latest remarks which caused this issue.  His previous remarks had gone mostly unnoticed by NBC for years.  This was a tipping point.

The man was on the air over 1000 hours a week.  His ratings were very high.  People liked to listen to him endorse the death of gay people and calling Hillary Clinton Black.  It was good for ratings, and for a long time was tolerated by NBC (something no black person has ever achieved).

Michael Richards’ act caused a momentum that barred the “n word” from ever being used at that comedy club.  Hopefully, this will have a similar affect and put a stop to vitriolic language on other networks.

Um, may I say something, please?
Now I’m saying this as a feminist, of jewish desent, who grew up in the barrio. (everyone get all that?)

Imus is scum. He’s ignorant, homophobic, racist, sexist, and just plain not funny. Having said that, I do NOT think that he should be fired for what he said. We live in a country with free speech. Because of this free speech we have things like this forum, and we also have things like KKK rallies. Now, I’m by no means supporting what he said, but to fire him because of what he said would cause a slippery slop when it comes to censorship. HOWEVER, he should be fired if his words and actions lead the company he works for loses: ratings, sponsers, and money. His being fired would be because he’s a financial liability. If you want him fired then stop listening to the show, write NBC and tell them they have lost a customer until he’s gone. But for NBC to fire him BECAUSE of him using his freedom of [removed]no matter how wrong and screwed up it was) would make it easier for stricter rules of censorship to be implimented and ect. ( I’m sure you get my point.)

I agree. I decided long ago that I was taking back the word ‘Cracker’. Only we whites can say that word.
I expect word from Nabisco any day now.

It’s not a double standard, it’s hypocrisy. If there is a word so bad people can’t say it, then make it that across the board.
He used a terrible phrase yes, but, let’s look at this. I know of at least one book at a local library called ‘Nappy Hair’. It’s even a children’s book! So, it’s ok there, but not from him? (Barring the fact that of either part of what he said, I believe the first part wasn’t true, and the second, well, how do we know?)

I don’t like Imus.  I don’t listen to Imus.  I don’t care about Imus.  But I don’t think he should have been fired for what he said.  It was an overblown exaggerated story.  The End.
