Spiral, a follow-up feature to Hatchet, reunites Adam Green and Joel David Moore, and theatrical and home media distribution is planned for 2008.
BURBANK, Calif. (Oct. 20, 2007) – Anchor Bay Entertainment, the industry leader in contemporary and classic horror programming, announces the acquisition of the theatrical and home media distribution rights to Spiral, the highly anticipated follow-up feature from the writer/director and star of the independent cult horror film Hatchet.

Joel David Moore plays Mason, a reclusive artist who finds new life in the eyes of his latest subject Amber (Amber Tamblyn, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Grudge 2, CBS’s Joan of Arcadia). Wrestling with inner demons waiting to surface, Mason grapples with a past that not only haunts him, but might come to haunt her as well. Zachary Levi (NBC’s Chuck, ABC’s Less Than Perfect), and Tricia Helfer (Sci-Fi’s Battlestar Galactica) co-star in the spellbinding psychodrama.

Spiral reunites Hatchet alums writer/director Adam Green and star Moore (Dodgeball, Art School Confidential and the upcoming James Cameron epic Avatar). For this film, Green and Moore expanded their artistic reach by co-directing the film. In addition to co-directing and starring, Moore also shares screenplay credit with Jeremy Danial Boreing, and producing credit with Boreing and Cory Neal.

Spiral has already received numerous accolades. Most recently, the film was awarded Silver Medal in the AMD Next Wave competition at September’s Fantastic Fest in Austin (where two years ago, Hatchet started its journey to the big screen), as well as the Golden Vision Award at the 2007 Santa Barbara Film Festival. Spiral was also been selected for exhibition at this year’s Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival and London FrightFest. Aint-It-Cool News gave it 4.5 stars out of 5, while FrightFest called the film “A Hitch-cocktail of precision directing, deft pacing, startling imagery and clean style.”

“Anchor Bay is pleased that we can partner again with Adam and Joel for Spiral,” said Mark Ward, vice president of acquisitions of Anchor Bay. “Both are uniquely gifted filmmakers, and Spiral promises even greater chills than Hatchet.”

“Spiral represents a radical departure in tone and style from Hatchet,” Green said. “I’m thrilled that Anchor Bay Entertainment has now chosen two of my films for inclusion in their amazing film library.”

Moore said, “I’ve always been a fan of Anchor Bay. Having Spiral represented by the Rolls-Royce of genre programmers is an absolute thrill for me.”

The announcement was made by Ward as part of the film’s presentation at the 2007 Hollywood Film Festival. The film will play in exclusive theatrical engagements in early 2008.

This holiday season, Anchor Bay knows who’s been naughty and who’s been nice…and who’s going to end up on ice!

In the autumn of 1984, a low-budget horror thriller was released that ignited a firestorm of international controversy. The film was Silent Night, Deadly Night, and for more than a generation, it has remained one of the most hotly debated films in the horror genre.

On December 11th, Anchor Bay Entertainment, the industry leader in horror home entertainment, will re-release this unforgettable horror classic, decked out with all-new holiday-themed cover art that truly spreads good cheer…with a few screams! SRP is $14.98, with pre-book on November 8th.

Even before Silent Night, Deadly Night was officially released, protestors lined up to loudly decry a movie portraying Santa Claus as a deranged, axe-wielding killer. The unexpected furor so caught the original distributor off-guard that it hastily yanked the film from theaters, virtually guaranteeing a fast death at the box office. Years later, when the controversy died down and the film was released to the home video market, Silent Night, Deadly Night became the cult classic it is today, having spawned no less than four sequels, with a remake currently in development.

Years ago, little Billy saw his parents murdered by an escaped killer wearing a Santa Claus costume. The experience left indelible scars on his psyche, made all the worse by his subsequent years languishing in an orphanage, where his life was made a living hell by the cruel and domineering Mother Superior (Lilyan Chauvin, Universal Soldier).

With the help of the sympathetic Sister Margaret (Gilmer McCormick, Slaughterhouse-Five, Starting Over), the 18-year-old Billy (Robert Brian Wilson, “Search for Tomorrow”) secures a job at a toy store. But when the store’s regular Santa is injured, Billy is called upon to don the red suit. But as he does, he becomes a ticking time bomb. The traumatic memories of his parents’ murders, combined with the abuse he has suffered at the hands of the Mother Superior, propel him into a state of psychotic rage. Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s got murder on his mind…

The film also features a notable appearance by legendary “scream queen” Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers). Silent Night, Deadly Night was directed by Emmy Award nominee Charles E. Sellier Jr. (producer of Breaking the Da Vinci Code, “Encounters With the Unexplained” and the cult classics Hangar 18 and The Boogens).

"A young, moist, buxom teen vixen finds herself hurled into an odyssey of forbidden sex and unspeakable violence after an innocent evening dabbling in the occult. What started as a simple child's game has now become a fight for her life! What is this evil that she has summoned from beyond? And why does it have a fro? What kind of horrific acts will she be subjected to? And what price will her super-hot, half-nude friends have to pay? But more importantly, how much Caucasian blood will have to be shed to stop....the BLACK DEVIL DOLL?!!"

Black Devil Doll is a full length feature...

From the sick and twisted mind of Shawn Lewis, former editor and publisher of Blackest Heart Magazine and the creative force behind Rotten Cotton Graphics, comes the sleaziest Blaxploitation Horror film ever envisioned.

Five naive young women are raped, abused, tortured, and killed(?) by an evil jive-ass talking ventriloquist doll possessed by the spirit of an executed black militant death row inmate.

Who will survive? What will be left of them? Will their virginity be intact?

It's Chucky meets Dolemite in this violent, misogynistic, sleazy horror film directed by up and coming genre director Jonathan Lewis.

Not intended for children. Black Devil Doll features totally awesome scenes of murder and rape! No one under 17 will be admitted!

Black Devil Doll will be screened at horror conventions and film festivals world wide throughout most of 2008 and finally hitting DVD Halloween 2008!

You may be wondering why make a sequel to a film that hasn’t been released yet, isn’t that a little soon? Yes! But remember, the original was shot nearly 3 years ago, so there’s definitely been time to think up a sequel. Unfortunately, as you probably well know, getting an independent film distributed is close to impossible, which is why it took so long for the first to arrive and which is why we would also like to make a big announcement about it’s release!

In a move that boggles the mind, someone has decided to remake Black Devil Doll from Hell.
A remake of sorts although all it seems to carry over is the possessed black doll that kills. The original was a little over an hour long and so awful I got a headache from watching it.

In the original a very religious, trainwreck of a woman buys the doll at a curio shop, slowly falls in love with it and HAS SEX WITH IT. The doll goes missing and her life falls apart as she starts smurfin everyone she can to recreate the thrill she got from the doll. Then in the most tacked-on ending I’ve ever seen she walks into her room one day and the doll is there, she screams, blood comes out of various facial orifices and she dies.

It really seemed like the director had some sort of agenda or higher meaning on his mind when he shat this one out but it fails horribly. NOT worth watching.

This however looks like it might at least be funny.

But probably not.

Pickled Embryo covered the original in their blaxploitation episode. I didn’t heed Damon’s warning but please heed mine. Do not seek out this film..

One of the MOST buzz generating films from the recent Sundance is going to see the light of day! Thanks Harvey Weinstein!
Teeth is the story of a girl struggling with her budding sexuality when she discovers her vagina has teeth.

http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/09/23/teeth-finally-being-released-in-november-distribution-rights-sold/

“The Weinstein Company and Lionsgate co-purchased Teeth fairly quickly at Sundance for a reported price of around $1 million. The film then went quiet for a while after the fest and a lot of the great buzz has died off. Harvey Weinstein stated that he wouldn’t alter the film’s content at all and would keep it as it is - great news because there is quite a bit of raunchy sexuality and ridiculous gore, including a number of chopped off penises. However apparently the film’s rights for distribution were sold by Lionsgate to the smaller Roadside Attractions, who has taken a number off “left-for-dead” Lionsgate movies previously.”

Harvey Weinstein refusing to alter the film in any way is awesome and I think will lend to the success this film will no doubt achive. An 82% fresh rating on RottenTomatos.com? I really hope this hits big and Lionsgate regrets selling it off.

If this makes it to theaters I’ll be seeing it multiple times and so should anyone else that wants to see MORE films of this caliber. Your dollars really matter in situations like these.

“Amateur Porn Star Killer 2” is in the works! The new chapter to the widely critically acclaimed, award-winning controversial feature is gearing up for production.
The original “Amateur Porn Star Killer” was groundbreaking for many reasons. The first is that it is known to be the cheapest feature film ever made (just 45 bucks!). The second is that it had a cast and crew of just 3 people. It was also shot almost entirely in one location: a cheap motel room. No lighting was used. It took only 3 hours to shoot. The actors had no previous feature film credits to their name (nor did the director). And it only took one take to get it right (seen as it takes place in real time with the camera rolling non-stop.) It features graphic sex scenes and a murder, and even with little to no staging/blocking, everyone seems convinced. Even more important, is that given all these circumstances, the film managed to get a DVD distribution deal, a small theatrical run, and outstanding reviews, plus a couple of online critic awards along the way.

What was “APSK” all about? A snuff film. Why should we be excited? While others have looked to shock or disturb people with torture-porn films, and faux snuff films featuring graphic violence, “APSK” features not one drop of blood and not a minute of torture (at least physically). Still, this miniscule movie has shocked more people with it’s realistic approach than most recent Hollywood torture-porn films (i.e. “Hostel 2”, “Captivity”, “Saw 3”). So, why make another? Good question. Director Shane Ryan calls it “a further look into the mind of Brandon,” the Killer in the movie. He’s a drifter, known to have murdered many women throughout several states, and still on the prowl. “Every victim reacts differently, each location/crime scene sets the tone for a new experience, every chapter in Brandon’s life is different. Think of the film as a book, with 3, 5, maybe 10 chapters. Hopefully each chapter will capture further insight into Brandon’s mind, and/or the mind of the victim. I simply find it fascinating and would love to take a deeper look.”

Well, there you have it. Catch the first “Amateur Porn Star Killer” in stores November 6, 2007 and visit the Alter Ego Cinema web site to find out how to get your name in the new film!

SHOCK IT TO ME! HORROR FILM FEST INVADES THE CASTRO THEATRE FOR A SPOOK-TACULAR THIRD YEAR!

SPECIAL GUESTS TO INCLUDE LEGENDARY DIRECTOR JOE DANTE, HAMMER FILM STARLET VERONICA CARLSON, AND HORROR HOST JOHN STANLEY!

San Francisco — The third annual Shock It To Me! Horror film festival oozes its way into San Francisco’s legendary Castro Theatre at 429 Castro Street, just in time for Halloween, with a dozen classic horror films!

Unstoppable. Unbelievable. Shock It To Me! will be chilling and thrilling audiences the entire weekend of October 5 —7, 2007, with a horrific mix of fright films, special guest fiends, ghoulish giveaways, midnight mayhem and more.

Special guest stars will include legendary director Joe Dante, on hand to screen his werewolf masterpiece, “The Howling,” as well as his tribute to horror schlock-masters “Matinee” and “Gremlins 2!” And heading up a horrific night of Hammer horror will be the lovely Veronica Carlson, presenting a double feature of “Dracula Has Risen From the Grave” and “Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed.” Both Mr. Dante and Ms. Carlson will answer audience questions and discuss their films.

The Castro Theatre and Shock It To Me! are also proud to welcome very special guest, author and horror host John Stanley. If you grew up in Northern California in the ‘70s and ‘80s, you’ll remember Stanley as the host of the incredibly popular “Creature Features” (1971-84), broadcast on KTVU Channel 2. Fangoria magazine called John “The Leonard Maltin of Horror,” while Joe Bob Briggs stated, “John Stanley knows more about horror movies than any person alive.” John will not only meet with fans and interview our Guests of Honor on stage, but will bask in the glory of his new magnum opus, “I Was a TV Horror Host” – a historic overview of the Horror Host phenomenon, with his experience on “Creature Features” being the centerpiece.

But that’s not all, fright fanatics- fans of classic Blaxploitation horror will scream their heads off at the double feature of “Blacula” and “Sugar Hill.” And you cannot miss the rare midnight screening of “Killer Klowns from Outer Space!” This show will feature REAL killer klowns terrorizing the audience! Also to screen at midnight- “Re-Animator!” Plus- Roman Polanski’s sinister tale of Satanism, the horrific “Rosemary’s Baby,” More films to be announced!

Besides the movies themselves, the upstairs mezzanine of the Castro will be crawling with vicious vendors, eager to sell their horrific wares: gory goods, terrifying
t-shirts, malevolent memorabilia, putrid posters, demonic DVDs, monstrous models, and all things spooky and kooky.

Diary of the Dead has been picked up by the Weinstein company!

"The Weinstein brothers have been busy at the Toronto film festival, where they picked up the distribution rights to George A Romero's latest zombie outing, titled Diary of the Dead. The Weinstein Co paid a reported $2m to $2.5m for the rights in a deal that secures a theatrical release for the movie, which centres on a group of film students who run into real life denizens of the undead while filming a zombie flick."

http://film.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,2167484,00.html

To me it's a shame that the man that single handedly defined a genre of horror films is submitting his work to a film festival and looking for distribution buuuut then Land of the Dead WAS pretty sub-standard and as we all know you're only as good as your last box office take.
I've not seen Diary of the Dead yet and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for something great to lift my spirits for the coming "winter" because the next project ol Georgie boy is discussing is a Zombie Comedy....

..oh lord.
