To read the works of Remittance Girl is to discover worlds where the walls between fantasy and reality bleed into one another. They are stories filled with characters that are unfettered, allowing them to give in to their deepest and, often times, darkest desires. Each work making their author all the...

Our three-film bender the day before had left us all drained (and another late night of partying didn’t help) so we decided to tackle day three of the 22nd annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival with a bit of lighter schedule.

Going the DistanceDrew Barrymore has been on the big screen for most of her life. She's gone from child star, to drug addicted teen, to adult actress/director. In many ways, she’s America's Sweetheart, giving audiences winning and heartfelt performances. Her latest, Going the Distance, will charm some and irritate others.

MacheteTwelve films and nearly twenty years later, I’ve come to accept the fact that Robert Rodriguez is simply not as good as he’s billed to be. He’s had some highlights to his career, true; Planet Terror was infinitely more entertaining than Death Proof, its Grindhouse companion, and From Dusk Till Dawn remains one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen.

The Ultimate Avengers: The Next Generation 1The litmus test to determine whether or not Ultimate Avengers will be to your taste is your response to this question; how do you feel about a story where a supervillain throws a baby out the window of a ten-story building, just to show how evil he is? If you find that too sickening to think of, even in a fictional story, then you certainly won’t want to read this comic. But if you find that a darkly comic idea, you might get a kick out of Ultimate Avengers. Just don’t go in expecting much more than a perverse thrill.

The AmericanGeorge Clooney is one of the true movie stars left in Hollywood. He has the name recognition to open a film strong, regardless of the subject. In a world where special effects and planned tie-in are all a part of the matrix of moving making, he’s one of the few standouts, somehow above the fray of Tinsel Town. His latest, The American, is another push for Oscar gold.

Comic Con CherryThanks to Alex and PopSyndicate, I achieved another ‘first’ in my (long) life: attending my first comic book convention, Wizard World Chicago Con to be exact. Driving up to the convention center, I actually felt a little nervous. I really didn’t know what to expect. And after stepping onto the convention floor for the first time… the best word that comes to mind is ‘overwhelmed.’ I ultimately had an incredible time, met some really great people, saw some old friends and logged in far too many miles on my poor choice of footwear (low top Chucks).

PopSyndicate PSAMutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward.

But is it two steps forward and three steps back?

Swamp Thing and BatmanBatman has a problem. Gotham is being overrun by OMACs and even he's got to admit that's a little much for a guy dressed as a flying rat, even if he is Batman. So what's he gonna do? Luckily he's not even limited to calling in the Justice League, he has the Justice Society, the Teen Titans, the Outsiders, the Metal Men and so on and so on. He has a massive amount of options to help him deal with the problem thanks to a whole world of superheroes (and then some if you count the Green Lantern Corps). This is because Batman exists in a shared universe, where characters like Superman, The Flash, and Captain Marvel can interact with each other any time a writer or editor thinks it would be kind of cool.

Our second day at the 22nd annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival began with greasy breakfast food (all the better to soak up last night’s liquor consumption) followed by a brisk walk around the harbor area and some shopping.  My companions and I faced a crowded evening, including two features and a shorts program.

PopSyndicate's 11 Favorite VillainsIt’s been said by actors that villains are the funnest characters to play. They lack the morality that we – most of us anyway – attempt to live by. Villains are ruthless and terrifying with their lack of regard for human life and their willingness to do anything, and we mean anything, to get what they want be it riches or power or their victim. Be they villains with honor attempting to avenge themselves or simply monsters from the deepest recesses of our nightmares, it’s the villain the audience tends to enjoy the most. Be they maniacs or monarchs these aren’t the kind of people we want to piss off.
