Does every movie need a teaser poster? Can’t they just come out with the regular poster and be done? The Batman teaser poster was the logo. Actually, I think ALL of the Batman teaser posters were just the logo. Event the fan posters of movies are more interesting than the studio versions. Between the Wanted teaser of a intensly photoshopped version of Angelina Jolie, or the incredible let down of Castlevania teaser poster. What is it with teaser posters that just plain suck?

I take it back, partially. Some teaser posters rock and need no further help Transformers, Iron Man, Star Trek. Others?

The first official trailer of the Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton is out. Luckily, you don’t need to pile into a theater seat to catch it. But watching it on the big screen would probably be more kick a**. Watch the new Hulk trailer now.

The explosive, action-packed adventure in one of the all-time most popular superhero sagas unfolds with a cure in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: THE INCREDIBLE HULK. We find scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination (Tim Roth)--a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own. A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City from total destruction. And on June 13, 2008...one scientist must make an agonizing final choice--accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

The Incredible Hulk smashes into theaters June 13, 2008.

Michael Bay producing Ouija? Ridley Scott on Monopoly? Are Hasbro games going Hollywood?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro and Universal unveiled their new partnership. Six years and four movies based on Hasbro game and toy lines. Michael Bay is already signed on as a producer for a Ouija project (in regards to Ouija boards, don’t trust spirits that don’t have bodies of their own ‘cause they’re bored, sexually frustrated and looking for a cheap laugh). The article also mentions Hasbro is talking with Ridley Scott for a Monopoly project. Hmm… Ridley Scott on Monopoly…

WIFE: Who’s that at the door, Harold?

HUSBAND: It’s a giant wheelbarrow, dear. He says he’s wanting to buy up all the properties on our street for some business development.

WIFE: How much is he offering?

HUSBAND: 260.

WIFE: 260,000 dollars? Call your cousin Vincent, the lawyer and make sure this is legit.

HUSBAND: No, it’s just 260 dollars.

WIFE: Well, you can tell him he can take his fancy money and shove it right up--

HUSBAND: Calm down, dear. He’s a giant wheelbarrow, he doesn’t even have one of those.

WIFE: Don’t tell me to calm down when someone’s insulting us like that. Go tell him ‘no’.

HUSBAND: But--

WIFE: Don’t start with me Harold. We’re not interested and that’s final.

HUSBAND (at the door): I’m sorry, sir. But we’re not interested in your offer at--

SQUISH

WIFE: Harold?! Aaaaaaa--

SQUISH

[Minutes later out on the street]

POLICE LIEUTENANT (on megaphone): This is the police! We have you surrounded. Come out with your hands up and--

POLICE OFFICER #1: Sir?

POLICE LIEUTENANT: What?!

POLICE OFFICER #1: Well, lieutenant… it’s just… he’s a wheelbarrow, sir. He doesn’t have hands.

POLICE LIEUTENANT (on megaphone): Fine! Come out with your handles up, so we can take you directly to jail! Make it easy on--

CRASH

POLICE LIEUTENANT: Dammit, he’s making a run for Go.

POLICE LIEUTENANT (on radio): All units, set up a roadblock at Atlantic Avenue and Vermont. Suspect is a giant wheelbarrow. I repeat, suspect is a giant wheelbarrow.

POLICE OFFICER #2 (from radio): Oh, that’s a good one lieutenant. You had me going there for a sec. Giant wheelbarrow. That’s fun--

POLICE OFFICER #2 (from radio): [expletive of your choice here], look out! Turn dammit or we’ll hit that--

SMASH

CRUSH

CRINKLE

POLICE LIEUTENANT: Sigh. Of all the crazy towns to choose from, I had to pick the one with frustrated giant wheelbarrows, thimbles and top hats trying to live the American dream.

The popular anime Akira is getting the live action treatment, but… who’s that guy writing it?

The news is rolling around about Leonardo DiCaprio and Warner Brothers producing a live action version of Akira. It was one of those milestone anime films back in the early 90s here in the states because it showed us the potential of the genre--fluid motion and detailed artwork (no skimping and taking shortcuts here). You figure this kind of high profile adaptation will be entrusted to some veteran screenwriter, but then you see the name… Gary Whitta. Unless you’re into video games and/or comics, you might be wondering who that is (and many comic book readers might still be scratching their heads).

So, what’s his background? Former editor-in-chief of PC Gamer (and the the last time I read the mag, I saw he was writing the Backspace column). Consultant and scriptwriter contributing to games like Gears of War, Prey and Duke Nukem Forever. Writer of the Death, Jr. comic (a video game to comic adaptation). Screenwriter of The Book of Eli (a post apocalyptic Western), which sold to Warner Brothers.

So… proven track record at adapting properties? Check. Knowledge of the post-apocalyptic genre? Check. Doesn’t slack on deadlines? As a regular columnist and former editor-in-chief, I hope not. Gives me a little more confidence in it, but it’s early… anything can happen still (it’s the unofficial Hollywood motto).

I know that many folks are crazy for Night of the Comet, but my favorite is Chopping Mall. So I want to ask you about your co-stars in that. Barbara Crampton basically had the same career at the time - soap operas and Roger Corman (or Cormanesque) films. Did you ever look at each other and say “Well, killer robots beats having to memorize ten pages of dialogue every day”?

No, we were under the impression that we were making careers in film for ourselves at the time. When we all signed on for Chopping Mall we had no idea that would be the name of it. It was pitched to the actors as ROBOT, with the prestigious Robert Short creating the robots. We had no idea it was a camp-fest at the time. We were young and stupid like that.

Rose McGowan is pairing with Robert Rodriguez again on a new Barbarella? Is she going to be in every Rodriguez in the future? Ugh. She's the new Helena Bonham Carter.

I thought the Fonda version stood on its own as a classic. It'll be interesting to see Rodriguez' take on this. Whether or not this is a remake, a sequal, or just a reason to make Duran Duran references, if for no other reason than to bring back fur bikinis I say go for it!

The New Face of Barbarella?:

In the “could be interesting” category this week, comes news that Rose McGowan has landed the lead role of the infamous space babe Barbarella in a remake due out next year. It seems that director Robert Rodriguez fell head over heels for Rose during the filming of Planet Terror and has asked her to don the space fur, translucent bodices and mile-high hair that Jane Fonda wore back in 1968.

With remakes all the rage these days, it was probably inevitable that someone would eventually get to do Barbarella (no pun intended I swear), but is there really a place for this sensual siren in today’s movie theaters? I can’t remember the last time a mainstream movie was released that built its plot around sex. In the original Barbarella, Fonda got her groove on with just about every inhabitant from here to Orion. Although the Fonda version really teased more than shocked, I have a hard time believing that today’s audiences are looking for anything wilder than what Roger Vadim originally delivered.

Given the fact that Rodriguez as made one of favorite movies of all time, Desperado, I’ll reserve judgement until we get to see the trailer. Then again, he also made Spy Kids, uugh. I just hope he gets Duran Duran to do the soundtrack. That would be strangely prophetic.
