Aronofsky takes on RoboCop

Pi director takes a slice of a remake.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM) has announced that art house director Darren Aronofsky has been signed on to direct a new installment of the 80’s classic “Robocop”.  “Road to Perdition” and “Thirteen Days” writer David Self is penning the newest installment of the franchise.

The film has been fast tracked to open in the summer of 2010.

Aronofsky is an interesting choice to relaunch the franchise.  Better known for unique art house films like “Pi”, “Requiem for a Dream” and “The Fountain”, the director isn’t the obvious choice for a big budget action film. With his penchant for extreme subject matter, hopefully he’ll return the series to his hard “R” rating instead of the milquetoast PG-13 rating of Robocop 3.

There is no word yet on who will star in the film, if this will be a reboot or part four of the series or what the rating is they are shooting for.
