Sisters unalike.
Beyonce’s got nothing on her little sis.
Solange Knowles is a multi-talented singer, songwriter, artist, choreographer, video director, executive producer and actress. Now, she makes a splash with the release of her sophomore album, SoL-AngeL and The Hadley St. Dreams.
Unlike her pop diva sister, Beyonce, Solange offers modern folk tunes for fans, with disco dance mixes for those who simply cannot do without the fast beat. Hits from this - her sophomore album - include “I Decided” and “Sandcastle Disco.” Both show the talent of this extraordinary singer. Her vocal style stands out in particular on each of the songs in this album. The sisters are divergent in style. Beyonce is all pop, but Solange successfully grooves to slow tunes and ballads.
The backup music reminds me of Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye and Barry White. The tempos are upbeat on most songs and Knowles has quite a range to her voice. I especially liked “T.O.N.Y.” an upbeat and fast-tempoed tune. “Ode to Marvin” is a fantastic homage to Marvin Gaye with slow background music similar to what you would find on his albums.
The title of the album got part of its name because Hadley Street is where the recording and mixing of the album took place. The word “Dreams” in the title comes from the fact that Knowles’ wishes came true when she was finally able to record her album in the dream factory that her father put together. Knowles renamed herself SoL-AngeL for the album because she liked the name.
She is touring in England, where “I Decided” is selling big. She hasn’t made arrangements yet for a tour of the US, but she will definitely have a strong following, not just because of her sister, but because of her own musical strengths. This lady is somebody to watch as she makes her way up the ladder of success.
