Now that Fayed has, according to Tom Lennox, “Slipped through CTU’s fingers” we appear back at square one.
Upon his escape Fayed contacts the Russian general who was involved in distributing the nuclear weapons, Dmitri Gridenko. Gridenko gives us a long-term cliffhanger by saying “The trucks have left Nevada and will reach the target in 2 hours.” The target, which can only be assumed yet again to be the greater Los Angeles area. Meanwhile back at CTU headquarters, we get something that simply doesn’t occur during 24, Chloe showed emotion. At least as much emotion as she’s capable of, delivering the most comedic line of the two-hour special to Jack “I’m really glad Fayed didn’t kill you this morning.” Flattered by Chloe’s outpouring of affection, he then proceeds to question his father Phillip, who lies through his teeth. Phillip denies any real involvement with the rouge Russian General and blames the connection with his company on Graem. When Jack leaves Phillip calls a man in a suit and puts in a request to kill Gridenko, Vice President Noah Daniels contacts President Palmer and lets him know his displeasure with the decision he made earlier in turning down Lennox’s proposal. Daniels isn’t shy about his opinion, “There is a thin line between conviction and stubbornness. You are standing alone.” The only person who seems in support of the president’s stance is Amri Al-Assad, the most wanted terrorist this side of Abu Fayed. He tells the president to watch out for those who oppose him “It’s simple human nature, they will come after you, I assure you of that.”
Jack questions Marilyn about Gridenko, and she has no real knowledge of the operation. With the exception of one night she followed Graem, whom she suspected of cheating, and overheard a conversation between him and some Russians. She offers to try to retrace her steps to the house for CTU. Just when you think they have a chance of finding Gridenko, Phillip gets wind of the plan and decides to take Josh with him and away from CTU.
On their way to West L.A. and the suspected location of Gridenko, Marilyn provides Jack with some drama typically reserved for Thursday nights on ABC at 10:00 P.M. eastern and pacific. Telling Jack, “I guess I’ve been trying not to think about you for twenty years.” Not long after that tearjerker she gets a call from Phillip who has news of a different variety. He demands she take CTU to an incorrect address which he has arranged, and if she tells them the right one he will kill Josh. Though she obviously would love to tell Jack the truth, the reluctant and now weakened Marilyn can’t risk the life of her son and does not.
Phillip takes an inquisitive Josh to a hotel due to road closures near his house. Josh wants to know what happened to his father and if it involves the nuclear bomb that went off earlier. As Jack and CTU arrive at the house Marilyn took them to, the ambush awaits in the form of a non-nuclear bomb inside that detonates with all of the agents inside. Marilyn and agent Milo Pressman stayed behind in the CTU truck and narrowly escape some of Gridenko’s men in a firefight that ends the episode. Though not before we see Jack alive, having jumped out of the window right before the house blew up and the clock turns to 3:00 P.M.
