Find the former Russian general turned terroist and kill him. Find the former President turned traitor and?

The Russians, we can never trust the Russians.  It has always been the Russians and it always will be the Russians.  Russians supplied the nuclear bomb that went off in Valencia and now CTU is hot on the trail of Vladimir Gridenko, the very man responsible.

Naturally Jack Bauer was the only survivor of the bomb that went off at Gridenko’s suspected location last week.  This week he wasted no time getting the real location from Marilyn while saving her and Milo’s life and capturing one of Phillip Bauer’s men.  A CTU team was sent to Gridenko’s safe house; however, that CTU team did not include Jack Bauer, which in the past has been an obvious sign of either null progress or an impending trap.  In this case there was no trap waiting, but there also weren’t any Russians.

Jack, having detained one of his father’s men, forces him to call Phillip and set up a meeting to get Josh back, a meeting that will be ambushed by Jack.  Phillip’s only bargaining chip remains Josh, his grandson who he has at gunpoint after he overheard Phillips conversation ending with “Or Josh dies.”

Meanwhile the pending presidential assassination continues to develop as Tom Lennox passes the President’s itinerary onto Reed Pollock, an aid of his who is spearheading the plan.  The plan which intends to make it appear that Hamri Al-Assad is responsible for the President’s death, is contingent on getting an unnamed man security clearance in the White House’s underground bunker.

Morris O’Brien, still distraught over his role in giving Abu Fayed the capability of arming the remaining nuclear bombs, temporarily relapses as we find out he is not only an arrogant know-it-all but also a recovering alcoholic who has shifted into a self-defeating whiner.  Amid his further mental breakdown back at CTU, Chloe notices alcohol on Morris’ breath and confronts him about it, though, using the charm he has always had deep down, he talks her out of telling Buchanan.

After another meeting with Reed Pollock, Tom Lennox finally has a change of heart and realizes it may not be the best idea to kill President Palmer.  However, Reed Pollock overhears this change of heart and no sooner hits Lennox over the head with the mother of all flashlights.  Before Lennox can get his two-cents out Reed knocks him out cold.  Jack, Marilyn, and Phillip’s man arrive at the hotel they are to meet.  Much to their surprise, Phillip calls and is across the street on the roof of another hotel, with a gun to Josh’s head.  For what seems like the fifth time this season, Jack gives himself up as a sacrifice for someone else.  This time for Josh Bauer, his “nephew” though I’m counting down the minutes until Marilyn tells Jack that Josh is his son and not Graem’s.

Jack appears at Phillip’s meeting location and after exchanging himself for Josh, is asked to kneel with his back to his father.  I have to wonder why, in a show like 24 with so much at stake the characters always request others to kneel before meeting their bitter end.  Anyway, while kneeling Jack tells his father he “Never meant to turn my back on the family.” Phillip turns his back on Jack and leaves the rooftop, sparing his son, but leaving behind a phone number for Jack to call.  The man who answers Jack’s call and offers help is none other than the traitor and former President of the United States: Charles Logan.
