Gredenko awaits Fayed’s arrival as they are expecting the third “visitor” to appear. CTU has accounted for two suitcase size nuclear bombs to this point as it appears the other three are on their way. As the trucks arrive the third visitor is no pedestrian suitcase nuclear weapon. Instead there is a highly advanced nuclear missile looking right back at the camera. President Palmer introduces the Ambassador of an undisclosed Middle Eastern country to Hamri Al-Assad. The Ambassador’s cold reception prompts Palmer to remind him that he can easily strike his country with warplanes in with one phone call. Jack Bauer updates Buchanan with his latest findings; Phillip Bauer is very guilty and that Charles Logan, the former President may be able to help their investigation. As Jack gets on a helicopter to go see President Logan he furthers my conspiracy theory by telling Marilyn that Josh “Reminds me of you.” Yes ladies and gentleman the clock is ticking until we find out that Josh is actually Jack’s son. Speaking on clock’s that are ticking, Reed Pollock gets the presidential assailant right past security and into the bunker.
Jack arrives at President Logan’s retreat outside of Los Angeles. With good reason, Jack is skeptical of every word that comes out of Logan’s mouth despite Logan’s claim that he has “Changed, I’ve got in touch with my faith.” President Logan tells Jack that the man who can bring them to Gredenko is the Russian consulate general, Anatoli Markov. Logan has leverage on Markov due to his role in Logan’s demise and Logan’s previous refusal to implicate him.
Jack will have to get Presidential authority from Palmer to take Charles Logan to downtown L.A. to meet with Markov. The fact that neither Jack nor President Palmer trusts Logan becomes irrelevant when he is their only option. Marking the second time President Logan has had to trust someone who has committed past heinous crimes against the U.S. to ensure the good of it’s future. Gridenko’s men with the warhead tell him that it will take two hours for them to prepare it. A much smaller bomb with a radius of only 10 feet is about to do more damage than the suitcase in Valencia did, as Reed Pollock’s man has finished prepping his bomb meant for President Palmer.
As final preparations are being made for Hamri Al-Assad’s speech Reed Pollock places some papers on the President’s podium, oh and a small explosive. On his way out of the room Reed runs into President Palmer who introduces him to Al-Assad. However, noticing something amiss with Reed along with his chief of staff’s appearance still pending, Palmer inquires, “I’ve been trying to reach Tom for the last hour, is there something I should know?” Reed brushes off the question as if nothing is wrong and leaves the room, proceeding to arm the bomb meant to put, as he sees it, the Vice President in control and the country on the right path. While Al-Assad is getting comfortable at the podium he notices red liquid dripping from the bomb. He attempts to dive away from the bomb and towards Palmer as it is detonated from right outside the room. President Palmer and Hamri Al-Assad lay motionless on the floor with another hour in the books.
