AFI FEST: Spider-Man Gets Caught in His Own Web - Ouch!

Q: Not knowing anything about this short – it really caught me by surprise. You obviously have a penchant for lulling folks into certain comfort level & then hitting them over the head. Or in the eye. Have you had any fights with your girlfriend lately?
A: Doesn’t every guy have fights with his girlfriend?
Q: Was this a fantasy of yours gone horribly wrong? Or just a nightmare?
A: It was a combination of a bunch of things. An incident in a car with my brother and a spider on a highway. A rubber spider I had as a kid that used to torment my mother with. A saying my mum used to say. And the general idea that people will risk their lives to get away from a spider.
Q: I read that some of Spider was filmed in New South Wales. When I think New South Wales, I think Babe. This was a little more industrial. Why this location?
A: Yes it was all filmed in Sydney which is in New South Wales. I shot it there because it’s where I live. New South Wales is a massive state so there are a huge variety of locations.
Q: I see you won the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival. In the states, it would be perfect for Halloween. Besides AFI, have you been in any other festivals here? You should be!
A: Yes it also played at Telluride.
Q: Anyone can make a film. All it takes is a camera and an idea. But it takes a talented writer to tell an exceptional story – especially in 9 minutes. Are you going to write more? Please do it before you get hurt! (I’m a mom, I couldn’t help throwing that in).
A: Thank you. Yes am making more stuff. I have just finished shooting my first feature film. It’s called ‘The Square’.
Q: What do you enjoy the most? Writing, acting, directing? You seem to be able to do all with equal measure.
A: I just like making films. So am happy doing any of the above. Directing is great for overall creative control. But sometimes its nice to work on other people’s films and just be a part of it without the overall responsibility. Also you get to learn from others that way. Kind of like a free film school. Sometimes its good to learn from other people’s mistakes not just your own.
