”... the font used on the back cover of the dvd is very nice.”
Aw, geez…. I really wanted to like this.
I actually don’t have much of an aversion to film-remakes; some of them are less than great, but that doesn’t really matter, as the original source material isn’t affected (just my opinion, of course). And thusly, the original April Fool’s Day isn’t harmed at all in my estimation by this remake. But still, it is disappointing. I usually look forward to the promise of a good ‘ol slasher flick, and I thought that the directors here, The Butcher Bros., did a good job with their previous outing, The Hamiltons.
And to be fair, it looks like the aforementioned Butcher Bros. may have had their work tampered with by other hands. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt (just to be on the safe side, go check out The Hamiltons instead).
But this April Fool’s Day is painfully mediocre. And just to give you a frame of reference, I liked the remakes of Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Dawn of the Dead and The Hills Have Eyes. I even though the Black Christmas remake was quite a bit of fun (although horrible when compared to the original Black Christmas, my favorite horror flick of all time).
Okay, so some rich kids who enjoy pulling pranks on other rich folks go too far one April Fool’s Day and accidentally kill a young lady. A year later they all receive notes from the dead woman, threatening them into meeting up at her burial site. From there on they’re all set off on a mad-goose chase by the killer, who begins to knock them off one at a time.
See, even my poorly-written description makes this sound good. But it just didn’t really do it for me. Maybe I had my hopes up too much? Sure, that could be it. I admit I might not be the audience for this. If you’re a teenage girl who can’t get enough of these PG-13 horror flicks that are so popular these days, you’ll probably enjoy it.
I didn’t hate it or anything; I was just barely okay, and I wanted more. Maybe I’m the asshole.
There are no special features here, although the font used on the back cover of the dvdis very nice.
Regardless, don’t let this dampen any enthusiasm you may have for seeking out the original April Fool’s Day, which is a fun 80’s slasher that can probably be found rather cheaply wherever you buy/rent your dvds.
