Battlestar Galactica (4.10) - Sine Qua Non

Roslin is missing. Lee is President of the Colonies. Adama is sitting by himself in a Raptor in the middle of empty space. And Tigh is commander of the fleet AND the father of Caprica Six’s baby. Are they serious?

With the baseship containing Roslin, Baltar, and half the Viper pilots in the fleet missing, Adama decides to risk the lives of his few remaining pilots - then the entire fleet - to find it. Realizing he isn’t thinking straight, he gives command over to Tigh and decides to wait for Roslin to return on his own, letting the fleet move on. Meanwhile, Adama won’t let Tom Zarek be the interim president, so they have to choose someone else. With Romo Lampkin’s help, the Council decides on Lee.

Even the best show on television has its missteps, and this week’s episode, while not terrible, was not at the usual level one expects from this show. Not only did they have several major shakeups all at once, but there were a few things that didn’t really make sense.

Adama’s quest for Roslin was out of control from the start, and now that he’s sitting in deep space all by himself; it’s just way over the top. Granted, he recognized the fact that his emotions were getting in the way of his job, but just as Lee was completely selfish for hanging up his Viper helmet, Adama has really lost it if he thinks finding Roslin is more important than leading the fleet. Worse than that was his decision to put Tigh in charge - especially considering what happened last time. And after they just got into an all-out brawl with one another to boot!

Speaking of Tigh, how the hell did he get Caprica Six pregnant? I realize they’re saying the Final Five Cylons are fundamentally different from the others, but they can impregnate other Cylons? I can suspend my disbelief just fine, but once they establish “rules” for a sci-fi show, it really bothers me when they break them.

Although they did a good job with the dead cat thing, the subplot with Lee becoming president was predictable from the start, and the scene with Lampkin holding the gun on him was…strange. I’m sure they’re going to end up finding Roslin, so it probably won’t be a long administration, but it does seem a little ridiculous that Lee went from pilot to Battlestar Commander to attorney to councilmember to president too quickly. I thought it was for Lee to give up his pilot wings, but now it makes sense that they had this outcome in mind from the start.

I did like how they showed Caprica Six alive, making us think she might make it, then had her die anyway. And they were obviously trying to make us think Cottle is the final Cylon by the way Six reacted to him. Is it possible? I’ve never considered it myself, and it doesn’t seem to make sense, but with this show you never know.

As far as the previews for next week, showing D’Anna telling Roslin she’s a Cylon: yeah, right. Like they’d really expose her in the previews! But wait—maybe they’re using reverse psychology on us? Hmmmmm.
