Bedknobs and Broomsticks

What could be more fun than flying on a magic bed or dancing in the sea with a variety of colorful underwatr creatures? You always know there is great fun be had when Walt Disney is involved.

Who doesn’t love a Walt Disney Film? Released 1971, this classic tale of magic and mayhem has been delighting fans of all ages for decades.

Angela Lansbury plays the extraordinary Miss Price who, during the war, is working very diligently to receive her degree as a certified witch. When she travels to town one day to retrieve a package, she is forced to take charge of three young orphans who have been evacuated from London after a bombing raid.

Miss Price has no intention of keeping the children for any longer than absolutely necessary, but finds herself growing fond of them. Charlie (Ian Weighill), Carrie (Cindy O’Callaghan), and Paul(Roy Snart) become aware of Miss Price’s attempts at witchcraft and in an attempt to prove the truth of the craft, Miss Price takes them on a remarkable adventure that includes a trip to the bottom of the beautiful briny sea as well as to the Isle of Naboomba where they must outwit the king in order acquire a magic medallion that Miss Price needs to complete her spell.

However, their adventure begins when Miss Price uses a spell from her lessons to travel magically to find her professor (David Tomlinson, who also played the father in Mary Poppins) . Together the five of them search for answers and the medallion. Upon returning home, they group finds the war has finally reached them and they must do something to save their village and Miss Price’s cottage.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks  is by far one of Walt Disney’s most fantastic films. With the combination of real action and animation, it allows viewers to enjoy the best of two venues for film. With flying beds, magic spells, and a variety of cleverly designed characters, Bedknobs and Broomsticks is just plain brilliant.

I have been watching this film for so many years and yet, I never tire of it. Each time is a new and equally exciting adventure.

This Enchanted Musical Edition has a few new things to offer viewers. Young viewers will certainly enjoy a nifty little lesson on special affects that is hosted by Jennifer Stone from Disney’s Wizards of Waverly place. I for one was shocked to discover how they get the real characters to work so well with the cartoon characters.

Music Magic introduces fans to the Sherman brother who handled the musical aspects of the film. We even get to hear a song or two that did not make it into the final version of the film.

I think one of my favorite bonus features shows a compilation of still photos that show the reconstruction of “A Step in the Right Direction” featuring the famed scenes of Miss Price’s first lesson on the broom.

This is o ne of those DVDs that you should always have in your personal library because no matter how young or old you are, there is always a smile to be found in the watching of it, even on the hundredth time.

Don’t let your kids miss out on this gem of a film and enjoy the warm memories of when you watched it the very first time.
