10. Takeover: The Return of the Imperial Presidency and the Subversion of American Democracy by Charlie Savage: Heavy on the legal side of the Bush-Cheney presidency. Regardless of your political beliefs it’s an illuminating read on the inner workings of our government.
9.The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz: Read this and his short story collection Drown. One of the best writers working today. Diaz knows Faulkner and The Fantastic Four.
8. Kings of New York by Michael Weinreb: Just what the sub-title says it is: “A Year Among the Geeks, Oddballs, and Geniuses Who Make Up America’s Top High School Chess Team”
7. The World Without US by Alan Weisman: Amazing Subject. What would the Earth be like if Man vanished.
6. Brothers: The Hidden History of the Kennedy Years by David Talbot: Talbot, founder of Salon.com, details one of the most important relationships in American history, including RFK’s take on the assassination of the President.
5. Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean by Douglas Wolk: Comics get the serious literary treatment they deserve.
4. The Gonzo Way by Anita Thompson: Hunter S. Thompson’s wife pays tribute to a great American writer and thinker. Everyone can learn from the lessons it contains.
3. Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life by Steve Martin: If you are at all interested in stand-up or comedy in general this is a must read.
2. Monster Planet by David Wellington: Wellington completes his zombie trilogy in fine style. One of the best horror writers going.
1. Legacy of Ashes by Tim Weiner: A highly readable but thorough history of the CIA. Timely and troubling.
Worst of 2007
5. The Secret by Rhonda Byrne: Actually came out late 2006 but it seemed to be everywhere in 07. I complete load of ******. If only is was true.
4. The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano: I added this book late only because everywhere you go it gets rave reviews. I found the long meandering narrative almost unreadable. Maybe I lost something in the translation.
3. “If I Did It” by O.J. Simpson: Don’t you have better things to do than read this kind of junk
2. Become a Better You - Joel Osteen: The title says is all. Pseudo-religions claptrap. But whatever works for you.
1. Gonzo: The Life of Hunter Thompson by by Jann S. Wenner and Corey Seymour: A oral biography that sets out to find fault with Thompson. Despite some interesting stories, Gonzo seems intent on tearing down its subject.

About your comments on the “Savage Detectives”, you should read it again and reconsider, or I’ll start thinking you are unable to appreciate what art is....
You are warned.

Gotta agree with Mister B. Gone. What a disappointment…
