Brat Halla is full of interesting characters, a good story, fun dialogue and great art. The Norse mythology angle really adds an emotional depth to the work that only adds to the fun.

Brat Halla is a wonderfully entertaining comic because of some very fun characters. Based around Norse myths, it has quite a few characters: Odin, Frigg, Thor, Loki, Balder and Hod. There are also Valkyries and other assorted characters, such as Fenrir. Each of them is distinctly unique in personality and look, and most of them are children being raised by Odin.

Of course, being children, they are bound to be a bit selfish and work against each other. In an interesting twist, Odin is a wise-cracking opportunist usually trying to evade his responsibilities, especially to the kids. If you add the harshness of the Norse mythology and the expected tragedy to this mix, you get some fun interaction and moments of drama.

That’s a very general description, but all these personalities provide some great over-the-top hijinks. It gets crazier and crazier, and you never know how things will end up. The storylines are full of twists and turns, with fun Norse myth references and settings. The writing is well done, with good drama-building sequences and character moments. The dialogue is always spot-on as regards to character, with touches of humor and irony. I’d love to see one of Stevenson’s scripts, if only to see how much more the artists add to the final page.

The art is done in a cleaned-up, yet still-sketchy style with all sorts of viewing angles. The expressions are great, and each character has very unique body language. All this is heightened by the colors, shadows and highlights that serve to make this comic eye-catching and fun to read. Regarding settings, I really appreciate when an artist can draw difficult things in a believable way, such as snow, grass or sand that require some effort to get right. There are also nice touches such as changes of clothing and background details that add quite a lot to the reading experience.

As a result, Brat Halla is full of interesting characters, a good story, fun dialogue and great art. The Norse mythology angle really adds an emotional depth to the work that only adds to the fun.
