More cowboys in outer space.
Bravestarr was one of the few 1980s action cartoons I never really got into at the time. I suppose I was just so loaded up on He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Thundercats and the rest, that I just never got around to it. Thankfully, the fine folks at BCI have seen fit to add it to the ever-growing list of that era’s shows to release on DVD. While it isn’t Filmation’s finest show, as one of their last major projects, it’s still worth catching.
The set-up, similar to Galaxy Rangers, is that outer space is set up Old West-style. Sheriff Bravestarr patrols a lawless planet (New Texas) with his trusted steed Thirty-Thirty, who can transform into his Chewbacca-esque partner. There’s also Wild Child, the kid sidekick of the show who was raised by the Dingo outlaws and always seems to get himself into trouble; and the beautiful Judge J.B. The recurring villain is Tex Hex, who tries to strip the planet of its valuable minerals. He’s not exactly Skeletor-level in terms of villainy, but capable enough.
This set is three discs and contains the final 32 episodes of the show. Very atypically of BCI animation sets, this features no special features either. I guess they covered everything on the first set.
The quality is pretty good, not really a question for a show from 1987. Hopefully there are more Filmation shows to be uncovered, as this pretty much brings to an end the majority of the BCI releases for the company (that they can legally release, at least).
BraveStarr is a fun little show that didn’t get a lot of attention on its original run, but nostalgia fans will greatly enjoy it on its new home on DVD.
