Comedy Central has never hidden the fact that it considers pot heads a large part of their target audience. In their new DVD, Home Grown, they throw down all pretense and pander shamelessly and hilariously to drug culture and the people who love it.

This DVD is broken up into three sections: stems (short sketches), buds (full episodes), and seeds (a mish mash of things that have brilliant underlying meaning while on hallucinogens), all of which are graced with beautiful menus, glorious cg landscapes full of mushrooms or bongs made of fallen apples. Bob Ross’s hypnotic voice murmurs over the sounds of nature, soft and gentle. The background rolls like wallpaper will if one is on acid.

Buds consists of episodes of Reno 911 (the Burning Man episode), TV Funhouse (the Christmas episode, where the anipals extract Christmas cheer from Doug’s spine and snort it), The Sarah Silverman Program (the blackface episode), and Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil (beer vs. pot).

Stems features bits from a wide variety of shows, including Chappelle’s Show, Drawn Together, Crank Yankers and Viva Variety. Also included are Comedy Central’s Quickies from shows like Lil’ Bush, South Park, Reno 911 and The Sarah Silverman Program (are we seeing a pattern yet?).

Seeds is the best part of the DVD and definitely the most accessible when high (not that I speak from experience, all you law enforcement peoples out there). There is a brilliant documentary about spiders on drugs, an episode of The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross , a 1971 short documentary on weed, and a small grouping of shorts from The Animation Show (which is also out on DVD in its extended form).

There is no end to how amusing this DVD is. It features a lot of the best of Comedy Central, and stuff that hasn’t been around for years, but should be. Viva Variety, anyone? I know that Reno 911 is a hit and features a lot of the same people, but man, do I miss that show. It’s a DVD that can be tossed in with like-minded company around, and will amuse all.
