With the strike of one stray lightning bolt, Zack’s life is urned upside down. In a new place with a new stepmom, he fights off bullies while trying to destroy a very bad spirit.
Things have gotten tough for Zack. He lost his mom to cancer and is certain that she is haunting him to punish him for being such a bad son. Now his dad has remarried and the new family has moved back to his father’s hometown. The bad news is that the house they are moving into has a very scary history. Fifty years earlier killer caused a horrible accident at a crossroads that left 40 innocent people dead and a host of spirits left hanging around.
Zack isn’t sure how things are going to work out, but with the help of one very special new friend, he is hot on the trail of trouble. When a wicked storm brings a bolt of lightning down on an old tree it releases the spirit of an evil man determined to regain what he thinks was stolen from him.
Along the way Zack discovers the true meaning of family and discovers that things aren’t always what they seem.
Crossroads is a super diversion from Chris Grabenstein’s adult novels featuring John Ceepak. This book is written for kids and Grabenstein does an excellent job of capturing the essence of Zack’s age. Many writers who develop great stories for kids, lose the impact by not writing on the kids’ level. Grabenstein has a talent for it.
Crossroads is narrated by J.J. Myers and she does an excellent job! Her inflections and enthusiasm for the story are evident in her telling and it makes the story that much more enjoyable. I recently had a brief conversation with Chris Grabenstein at the 2009 Boucher Mystery Conference in Indianapolis and was shocked to discover that said narrator is his wife. J.J. Myers is an excellent reader and I can tell you that I hope there are other books out there by her so I can give them a try.
Readers of all ages will enjoy Crossroads and while I love a great book, this one was all the more fun as an audio. A great way to get your kids interested in reading. I look forward to reading Chris Grabenstein’s next audio book.
