Dave Fields: All wound Up

image

Heavy on the blues with a little rock thrown in for good measure.

The blues are timeless and Dave Fields proves it on All Wound Up.  This album is full of an energy that would seem difficult to maintain through 12 tracks, but he does it with style.
Fields’ music is like that of Fats Domino at times and Jerry Lee Lewis’ at others.  There are riffs and slides on his electric guitar and his piano playing is terrific.  He’s accompanied by four other people on this album and they’re all tuned in to make the blues sound like something that everyone will enjoy.
“Train to My Heart” starts off the album as a fast-paced number. It segues into “Ain’t No Crime” which is about no crime in loving someone.  Ada Dyer wails back to Fields in a way that captivates listeners. “Cold Wind Blowin’” slows down the tempo and lets the saxophone take over during the bridge of the song.  “Screamin’” is an instrumental piece that shows off the talent of Fields with his electric guitar and the solo he performs.
Fields has a rich voice that stands out on each vocal track on the album. He’s versatile and plays the bass, drums, guitar, piano and organ and takes us on a trip through Cajun country.  His music is funky, jivey and full of lively renditions that make you want to listen to the whole album.  Playing the songs through the first time, you never know what’s coming next.
This is his third album to date and Fields makes the songs worth listening to.  There’s plenty of lamentable moments as well as joyful sounds on these tracks.  I can say that if “Train to My Heart” is his opening number at a performance, he should get a standing ovation; it warms u the audience for what is to come.
I like the blues a lot and I think Dave Fields will become a favorite of yours, too.  Get lost in the music and enjoy the journey.

Whoa! Didn’t think I’d be hearing a Dolly Dagger riff any time again soon but here it is with the opening cut, Train to My Heart. Dave Fields can really crank it and wail in the middle eight, mindful of Hendrix crossed with the elder days Frank Marino a la Mahogany Rush. Fields also sings and doubles up on organ, but, man, that guitar playing! Trower, Marino, Uli Jon Roth, and all the rest had better start counting their days, ‘cause there’s a new deputy in town. However, keeping Jimi alive is not the intent of this CD.

Ain’t No Crime tosses in a bit of soul amid the rock, catching some of the old Mother’s Finest, while All Wound Up fades back into blues with a folky bounce and rockin’ base. A number of songs are loosey goosey, sliding all around the place between lubricious rock and swinging blues, harp provided by Billy Gibson (no, not the ZZ Top grizzled guy). The slow blues of Cold Wind Blowin takes it all back down, mellowing out for 6:06, Fields switching to a piano in the mid-section in an up-lounge tempo.Wound First Aid
