I enjoy Blues, Jazz and Swing. Performers like Dr. John, Stevie Ray Vaughan and John Lee Hooker always strike a chord within the musical soul. Dave Gross attempts the same thing on his sophomore effort Take The Gamble. This thirteen track CD features this young guitarist just tearing it up along with a heckuva band that features more than just the typical four piece ensemble. There is sax, cornet, harmonica, piano and organ on this album produced by the second guitarist, Duke Robillard.
The problem is that the band plays so well and the album is so well produced that it has no grittiness or soul to it. It sounds like studio musicians going through the paces. Granted, these guys can play circles around a lot of bands, but nothing really stands out and grabs you. There is nothing on the entire disc that I can recall or plays through my head later on…and I’ve listened to the disc four times trying to give it a chance. I don’t dislike it, but compared to my other albums with the same styles of music, this would quickly make its way to the bottom of the pile.
To be fair, you can hear song #12, “Once Had A Girl,” at his site http://www.davegrossband.com to see what you think. The song boogies, but is somewhat forgettable. Despite being chosen as “Best New Artist Debut” for the 2007 Blues Music Awards, Gross possibly needs a little heartbreak and hard times to get the edge he needs to really become a legend.
