What a farce!!
Dedication takes place in the big city and tells the story of Henry (Billy Crudup) and Lucy (Mandy Moore). Henry is a successful children’s book author. He has a contract to fulfill before Christmas, but when his mentor and collaborator (Tom Wilkinson) passes away, Henry is at loose ends. He’s always been more comfortable in a world of fiction than reality and doesn’t seem to care what happens or whether the book gets finish.
Along comes Lucy who is assigned to work with Henry to get the book done. She’s an illustrator and throws various ideas at Henry so they can work together as a team. But Henry seems lost in his world of fiction and at first has little to do with Lucy.
There is no real structure to Dedication. It tries to rely on colorful characters to make it worthwhile but fails. The book gets done and in the process Henry and Lucy fall in love. Predictably, this comes after Henry realizes there’s much more to life than fiction.
Odd bits of wit and humor are thrown in by Dianne Wiest. In fact, she provides a lighter side to this dismal movie. You might as well leave this DVD on the shelf and dedicate your time to something else. Where it got its name is beyond me; there is no oomph to the movie and I was bored the better part of it.
Dedication has no bonus or special features. Widescreen, Dolby surround, 95 minutes. Rated R with Spanish and English subtitles.
