Dexter (4.05) Dirty Harry

The hunt for Trinity is on!

What is the definition of making a dumb move? It’s putting a bullet in the sister of a serial killer. Which is what this season’s Big Bad, “The Trinity Killer” (John Lithgow) did in the last episode of Dexter. Needless to say, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is a trifle miffed.  And anybody who has watched Dexter knows the last place where you want to find yourself is on the receiving side of Dexter’s bad side.

While this season of Dexter has had its ups and downs, one aspect of the show that hasn’t ever failed to deliver is the Lithgow’s performance as The Trinity Killer. Lithgow has infused Trinity with a sense of menace and creepiness that pervades his actions even when he’s not actively hunting humans. Such as a scene this episode where Lithgow easily makes your skin crawl while he’s shopping for a hammer at the local hardware store. Which he plans to use later on in this episode when he goes to complete the third of his three victim cycle.

A cycle which Dexter aims to stop. Dexter’s hunt for Trinity finally bears fruit when he recovers Special Agent Lundy’s tape recorder from the police evidence locker. The tape in it gives Dexter his first inkling of who Trinity actually is. Dexter stakes out the crime scene where Trinity first completed his cycle 30 years ago in hopes that someone matching the description from Lundy is there when Trinity is scheduled to strike. While there he notices the security guard is not at his station. This sets off a frantic search through the skyscraper for Dexter who tries to capture Trinity.

Dexter fails to get his man, but succeeds in following Trinity in his escape from the building all the way back to his lair. His lair and what Dexter finds there is a surprise on the scale of Deb & Lundy’s getting gunned down last episode. Dexter finds he’ s not the only killer hiding in plain sight, and that Trinity is a lot more like Dex than Dexter cares to admit.

Dirty Harry is another good episode in this season of Dexter. If the makers continue the quality of this and the last episode, Dexter looks to recover the strength of the first two seasons.  The hunt for Trinity and Lithgow’s performance as Trinity are making a compelling case for him to be the finest of Dexter’s nemesis to date.
