Frank Sinatra – Sinatra at the Movies & Nothing but the Best

Cause Frank did it his way.

By the time Frank Sinatra died, he was an institution.  Sinatra is an icon and influenced more people more people than we’ll ever know.  When he died ten years ago, many people felt it was the end of an era.  Because he was such a legend it only makes sense that his catalogue would be exploited after his passing.  There are two new CDs featuring Ole Blue Eyes and both are well worth the money.  Nothing but the Best is an excellent one CD filled with twenty-two Sinatra classics and Sinatra at the Movies is a fine collection of songs from different films Sinatra starred in.

The only problem I have with Nothing but the Best is that it’s only one CD.  This could easily be broken into various stages of his life each with a best of collection.  It’s hard to compile sixty years of material into just twenty-two tracks.  The good news is this is one hell of a collection. Each song is a classic and reveals why Sinatra was the man.  From the opening track “Come Fly with Me” to his iconic songs “My Way” and “Theme from New York, New York” which close the CD, this is what you want to hear when you think of Frank Sinatra.  His silky voice fills you speakers as “Strangers in the Night” wafts out.

imageI was afraid that Sinatra at the Movies would have a couple of songs from the Nothing but the Best CD.  Fear not, it’s twenty song not found on the other CD.  Sinatra at the Movies has music from several of his films including, From Here to Eternity, Pal Joey, A Hole in the Head, Higher and Higher and others.  While you might not recognize the films, you’ll know the music.  From “The Lady Is a Tramp” to “I Couldn’t Sleep a Wink Last Night”, these are the songs that sold millions of soundtracks.  I sadden to see that Guys & Dolls isn’t featured on here but “Luck Be a Lady” is on the Nothing but the Best CD, so I’ll make do with that.

These two CD’s a great introduction to Sinatra’s work or if you’re looking to fill a few holes in your CD collection.  Frank Sinatra was on original and he made his mark on history.  Those he’s been gone ten years, his music is just a fresh and vibrant as it’s ever been.
