“We’re Calling The Shots Now,” Peter

It has been about 4 months since a hip, cool show that was as intriguing as it was strange graced us with its presence. Well, it’s back and it kicked off in high gear. Welcome back, Fringe. We missed you. The thing that I like about Fringe is that JJ is always pushing the envelope of believability. But he draws you in and makes you willing to accept what you see. Parallel universe? Check.Shape-Shifting technology? Check. Where can I get that device so I can go and be Angelina Jolie for a day? Right? Well, let’s get to it.
MMM let’s open our season… with some shape-shifting and murder. I’ve always wanted to be someone’s meat suit, haven’t you? Why are thesepeople so violent? Why do they kill people? How was that device created? Is the parallel universe where Olivia was more technologically advanced? Why do you have to put it in your mouth?Yuck. Speaking of Olivia that car crash was interesting. She wasn’t there and then she was flying through the windshield. How did this accident break through from one universe to the other? How did that shape-shifter get here? What happened to her over there? Didn’t she just talk to William Bell? I hope she remembers soon because I would like to know what happened wouldn’t you? I find it very intriguing! Whatever she learned over there must be important.
She is whisked to the hospital only to be declared brain dead. I wasn’t too worried because I knew that she would make it. She’s the main character! They can’t really have a show without her, hello. But it did make for touching moments between Peter and her sister, Walter, and Peter and Olivia. Then when she woke up she muttered something in what was revealed later as Greek. Why that exact phrase? Why were her eyes black? I think she was in the coma/brain dead from the shift from one reality to another, not just the accident. I wonder what lasting effect going from one universe to another will have and how that will affect her in the future. What do you think?
Now let’s talk about that mysterious typewriter. That was very intriguing to me that they can communicate between worlds. But via typewriter? Why a typewriter? Why not something a little more technologically advanced? And how do they use a mirror? Is it a window into another world? I would like to see the explanation for how that would actually work, scientifically. It must be like last year when they had soft spots in our fabric of time and they could use it to go between the two worlds. Is that what that mirror was? How did they know she didn’t die in the hospital? Is there an Olivia over there that might die if Olivia over here does? Curious.
Shout out to the X files alert: shutting down Fringe Division. Broyles goes to Washington to plead his case in front of what looked like a senate committee. They told him that they would have to have proof that their division is worth keeping commissioned. As Peter put it,they are a clean-up crew and aren’t there early enough to stop what is going on. How are they going to get their proof? How are they going to save Fringe Division? But, I again, wasn’t worried. The show has to have Fringe Division right? Moving on…
Olivia is awake and doing ok but she doesn’t remember anything about the other universe or what she was told. She said it would destroy us all and she has to remember. Was it Bell or Walter that told her that or someone else? Again, what happened over there? Must be the theme of this year. It will take a few episodes to figure it out and then stop it right? Then we find out that the shape-shifter plans on killing Olivia after interrogating her. Why? WHY? Look out Olivia, he’s comin’ to get ya!
Back at the lab, Walter figures out that the body has been drained of all its fluid and that a device with three prongs did it. He, once again, brings out an old video this time of a girl with nodes on her head from an experiment he did with Bell back in the 70’s. She babble son about another world that looks like ours but isn’t and a three prong device that causes someone to change. Bingo. Shape-shifter device. Now that the team knows how this all happens, they realize that this guy/girl is after Olivia. Go save her team!
And wouldn’t you know it that shape-shifter takes the identity of the nurse to get close to Olivia. She goes and interrogates Olivia but in a passive way, almost like she cares. When he/she learns Olivia doesn’t remember she just jumps on her and tries to kill our hero.Peter, Charlie and Jessup get there in time and chase after him, eventually finding Charlie with the body of the nurse. They also have the three prong device that causes the shifting. They have the device and their proof to the senate that they are in fact important. As Peter puts it, we are no longer reacting. Go Peter! He was kick-ass today! Almost like a leader that I know he can be.
Charlie is always at the wrong place at the wrong time, isn’t he? First it was the crazy dragon creature and now he gets whacked by a shape-shifter. Yes, I could tell it wasn’t Charlie from the get-go. No wonder they brought in another FBI agent because now Charlie is going to be the bad guy. How is he not going to get made? I mean, he knows nothing about Charlie. How long will it take them to figure out he really isn’t Charlie? I’m glad they just didn’t kill him off. We all immediately thought he would die, after all that he went through and how much we like him… so this was a twist I didn’t see coming. I like when I’m surprised. I’m just sad the Charlie we know and love is actually gone. Incinerated to be exact. Can we take a moment to grieve?
Three more things of note in this episode: first the Broyles/Sharp smooch. My mouth fell open. What does that MEAN? Did they have a relationship? Still have a relationship? Tell us JJ! Don’t let that kiss linger and not give us any insight! It was also kind of gross.Hm. Second is the ever-growing Peter and Olivia connection. The Greek that Olivia spoke when she woke up was the exact phrase that Peter’s mom used to say to him when he was falling asleep. It means, “be a better man than your father.” So what does that mean that both of them know that phrase? What does Peter’s mom have to do with that? Is she in the other world? Why haven’t we seen her? It’s curious, don’t you think?
Finally, agent Jessup. She is the new girl on the team but it seems like she has another agenda, doesn’t it? First she hacks into the database to learn more about the team and then she breaks out her Bible and marks each incident with something that seems to be from that book. Now that is interesting. Does she think this is the apocalypse like in revelations? If they make that leap I will jump up and down. I find apocalyptic shows fun! I read the Left Behind series and found that absolutely fascinating on how they paralleled the Bible literally. Also, Supernatural has incorporated Lucifer and God as characters. What fun! Bring it on, I say! Do you think that will deter people from watching if they start paralleling things to the bible? Or will it make it more of a cult favorite? I say it will be so interesting, because this show usually is. It might be the best apocalyptic show on TV. Wouldn’t you? What do you think? Discuss.
