So bad I want to slap the taste outta the director’s mamma’s mouth.
This Is Spinal Tap is a blessing and a curse upon the film community. Sure it created a classic film that has stood the test of time, but it also unleashed more than it’s fair share of crappy knock offs. There have been some really funny variations on the themes present in Spinal Tap but Gangsta Rap: The Glockumentary is not one of them. A movie so bad, that just watching the first 30 minutes should be outlawed as torture by war crimes counsels.
Taking every beat from This Is Spinal Tap, Gangsta Rap blatantly steals every idea it has from the film. The movie opens with director Carlton Bentley (real life director Damon Daniels) explaining his love of the rap group Gangsta Rap. After many years the group is trying to get back together and go on tour (Spinal Tap). Murder Mike (Slink Capone) and Du-Rag (Howie Bell), lifelong friends that have been at odds with each other creatively (Spinal Tap), are reforming the group with the newest member DB Ballistics (Schuylar Harvey) (Spinal Tap). Murder Mike’s trampy girlfriend is trying to take control of the band (Spinal Tap) and the gang is constantly infighting. Also lifted from Spinal Tap, the album cover bit, the prop gone wrong bit, and the stuffing your pants with fruits and vegetables to make your package look bigger bit.
Fine, you say that Fear of a Black Hat and to a lesser extent CB4 did pretty much the same thing in the early 90’s. Sure they borrowed from a better film but they didn’t blatantly rip it off. Maybe if Gangsta Rap: A Glockumentary was even remotely funny, it could be forgiven but it’s not. Say you haven’t seen Fear of a Black Hat or This is Spinal Tap beforehand (shame on you, go rent those two movies), Gangsta Rap would still be a letdown as the comic timing is off, the actor’s have about as much chemistry as white bread and the whole film looks like someone shot it for a high school project.
If you can still stand to have this piece of crap in your home after watching it, there are some deleted scenes and a music video.
Gangsta Rap: A Glockumentary is embarrassingly bad. I feel sorry for anyone attached to the making of it. I feel even worse for their friends and family for having to know them. I wish we could give negative ratings on Pop Syndicate because this one would be a big ole negative five star rating. Skip it or better yet, get it from your local video store and destroy it so no one else has to suffer.
