The best of the best of 2007

The Grammy’s are over but you can now get a collection of the most popular songs from the awards show.  Like the very popular Now series, the Grammy Nominees 2008 is a grouping of some of the biggest songs of the year in rock, rap, dance, country, jazz and other categories.  It’s hard to not like a collection like this but with such a varied selection, odds are you’re going to like one half and not care about the other depending on your taste.

Since 1995, Sony has been turning out these hugely successful CDs.  Each year they sell like hotcakes and the 2008 edition is no different.  Featuring, Paul McCartney, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, The Foo Fighters, Beyonce, Vince Gill, Green Day, U2 and others, Grammy Nominees 2008 is another solid release.  Drawing from six categories including Record, Song and Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Pop Female Vocal Performance, and Best Rock Group/Duo Performance, it’s nice to have all these songs collected on one CD.

The highlights of the album include Amy Winehouse “Rehab”, Foo Fighters “Pretender”, Fiest “1234”, Paul McCartney “Dance Tonight”, Herbie Hancock “River” and White Stripes “Icky Thump”.  These alone would make for a good CD.  The middle of the road tracks include Justin Timberlake “What Goes Around…Comes Around”, Beyonce “Irreplaceable”, Nelly Furtado “Say It Right”, Carrie Underwood “Before He Cheats” , Kanye West “Good Life” and Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah”.  The rest of the tracks are largely forgettable and it’s hard to believe that tracks from Daughtry, Maroon 5, Bon Jovi, Nick Lachey and Nickelback would release songs that would be Grammy nominated.  The Grammy’s are supposed be a collection of the best of the year.  What does that say about today’s music when Nick Lachey and Nickelback make it amongst the top.  I guess it’s about the same as the middle of the road Oscars.

If the listed tracks sound appealing to you, then you’ll be happy with this collection of songs.  The Grammy Nominees 2008 is a fine collection of hits from 2007.  It’s a shame Rihanna’s “Umbrella” wasn’t included.  Despite excellent sales, with the popularity of mp3 downloads from iTunes and other places, one has to wonder how much longer CD’s like will continue to sell.  You can pick up these individual tracks online and forgo the ones you don’t like.
