Sylar is back and as evil as ever – but he can’t do a damned thing about it. His wounds from last season zapped his powers, and someone unknown wants him to heal so that he can get the powers he stole from other heroes back. When he wakes up, Sylar believes he’s in Maui with hot chick Michelle. Michelle, turns out, is evil shapeshifter Candace, who was a pawn of The Company last season as she battled Nikki for Micah and abducted HRG’s wife for the agency’s twisted agenda. Not certain who Candace is working for now, but she did rescue Sylar last season and is tending to his wounds.
Sylar gets royally pissed when he discovers that he has no powers. His wounds apparently zapped them, and whoever is treating him is worried about some massive chest wounds that haven’t healed yet. Sylar can’t stand being a nobody. (Remember the episode last season with Mother Dear?) Michelle/Candace decides to cheer him up by showing off her abilities. Sylar gets The Look, knocks her out and takes her powers for himself. He can now begin to build his empire once more. (I had a horrible flashback to Sylar as Nathan as president in last season’s Five Years Gone. OMG!) But Sylar can’t make it work. He breaks out of the building and discovers that he is surrounded by rain forest in the middle of nowhere. No one is around – and he can’t escape. The Company is really anal about watching people – like poor Mohinder, who is getting in over his head in the spy game to take it down (read more below). I wonder if it’s a rogue group or the Old School heroes (or a group like them) who have their own agenda for Sylar for the “greater good.”
In an ironic twist, the gentle-spirited Peter – who Simone’s father had said could heal a nation instead of divide it like Nathan – has a bad side. I think he may be pulling a Nikki/Jessica. He still doesn’t know who he is, or how his powers work. He’s working with a group of thieves in Ireland – not really by choice, but because he has to help them rob an armored car to get a box that contains his life story. Peter absorbed Parkman’s abilities to hear thoughts last season. In Kindred, he “hears” one of the robbers talking about snatching the take and leaving the family out cold. The family of robbers (which has its own tattoo) gets pissed with his revelation and don’t believe him. Peter’s put on notice. But Peter’s powers come in handy when the robbery goes bad. When they get back together, the guy does try to rob them. Peter uses his powers to throw the guy against the wall and pulls a Darth Vader by “strangling” him. The girl Peter is falling for stops him from killing, but you can see death in Peter’s eyes – and he likes it. It was like watching Peter become Sylar. Way cool. After this, they make Peter part of the family, tattooing the crest on his arm and giving him the all-important box. Thing is, Peter’s not quite ready to look at it. Instead, he starts kissing the chick, and that’s when Major Moment #2 happens: As he kisses her, the Kensei crest – the Death Mark to Old School heroes – pops up on his arm. Hm…
In other Heroes news:
• Mohinder is over his head in the spy game to take down The Company. The new fuddy-duddy HRG puts him up in a specially-constructed lab at Isaac Mendez’ old apartment. They are watching his every move. Mo is supposed to help HRG find the last of the eight paintings to show the future. Mo finds No. 8 of 8. He sends the JPEG to HRG. On screen, it’s HRG, dead, and someone unknown taking Claire. Parkman is worried about Mo’s ability to take on The Company. He’s also worried about little Molly’s whose nightmares are getting out-of-control.
• Claire finally opens up to West during an argument and admits she has special powers. Remember, West can fly like Claire’s real father, Nathan. He picks her up and pulls a Superman, taking her up, up, up in the sky and to the beach. She sees a mark on his neck – it’s the same one that Nikki and Parkman got after their mysterious blackouts before they realized they had superpowers. West tells Claire he was tracked in St. Louis by none other than HRG. She’s not so sure she trusts Big Daddy anymore, and she doesn’t tell him about her little adventure with West, which I’m sure will come back to haunt them.
• Nikki and Micah say a final good-bye to the dead D.L. She drops Micah off in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans to stay with relatives while she goes to The Company to get cured. They want something from her, but we don’t know what -yet. Only that she is so desperate to be “cured” that she will do whatever it takes.
• Hiro makes Kensei a hero – and falls in love with Kensei’s future wife. He is able to leave messages for Ando in the hilt of the sword, which Ando finds in the future. It’s great a little heartbreaking at the same time. I keep wondering if Hiro will get the girl, even though he really can’t for history to stay the same. (Can’t? What am I saying? This is Heroes – anything can happen!) The real Kensei – an Englishman – must be in Claire’s family tree. He can heal, and his crest was the symbol of the (maybe) dead Petrelli Daddy, father to Nathan and Peter, and grandfather to the healing Claire. His crest is also the Death Mark to the Old School heroes. I’m curious where this leads by season’s end.
• Alejandro and Maya are still in Mexico. Alejandro gets arrested when they try to steal a car. Maya uses her Dead Eyes ability to nearly kill everyone. As they escape, a young American asks to go with them. They are going to leave him – until they find out he has a car.
The third episode of the series still feels like a set up – it’s the (hopefully) final introduction to all the plotlines and characters we will meet this season. Well, besides Veronica Mars’ Kristen Bell, who’s slated to appear soon as an aid to the heroes. It was good, but I’m definitely ready to get to the meat of the season. I enjoyed the fun of Claire and West and the romance with Hiro – who is probably my favorite gentle hero, with Sylar, of course, being the ultimate bad boy. But tonight, I saw a side of Peter that was incredibly intriguing. I wonder if he’s going to have a Nikki/Jessica complex now, or if he will somehow play a role in the revenge murders of Old School heroes.
If you have Sprint, you can text 6228 to get sneak peaks to next week’s episode, which will give us the goods on the Old School heroes and their killer. Or, if you prefer to know-it-all, you could grab that Heroes TV guide, which is a total spoiler for the entire season. Next week will be an episode to watch, because we find out about the Old Schoolers and Molly’s boogeyman.
