Storms everywhere.
Have you ever been in Florida during the hurricane season? Seen chairs, pieces of windows and roofs flying by in the wind? That’s part of what makes this tale interesting because Florida is jumping and hurricane season is here!
Serge and Coleman, his burned out buddy chase storms and dead bodies are piling up along the way. A serial killer writes letters to the editor of the local newspaper berating them for not catching him when he’s given them many clues. The clues, however, lead nowhere because the killer is long gone before the police arrive. Each letter fascinates the readers and frustrates the law. Just another typical day in Florida during the season of storms.
This is a whimsical, often comical book that takes knocks at the investigative side of the law. Hurricane Punch gives the raw side of the grisly deaths yet deals out punch lines as though this were a comedy. Yet Tim Dorsey tells it in an easy-to-read manner. There are gruesome, dark scenes throughout the book, but Hurricane Punch is written with the next punch line in mind.
The title alone is enough to keep any reader going. It could be a new drink since that’s what’s on the cover. It could refer to the kick the hurricane are having on Florida as they play havoc on the city while a serial killer wanders around. It could even be the next joke coming at you with the force of a hurricane that hits you from behind before you know it.
I liked the book from the standpoint of all the straight lines and follow up of one liners for the jokes. Serge and Coleman make a great team with Serge as the straight man and Coleman coming up with the one liners. I’d keep this one in my library.
