In an agonizingly predictable finale, Jericho residents take on New Bern as U.S. troops arrive via air to stop the skirmish so the new government can find the suspected terrorist hiding out in that territory.

Johnstone Green leads the charge as Jericho residents go toe to toe in a deadly battle with New Bern. The first wave of New Bern soldiers back off for reinforcements after Jericho uses its only tank ammo round to blow up a munitions truck. Johnstone Green is fatally wounded in the first battle.

The town mourns his death (after a very long deathbed speech, I might add). Jake steps into his father’s shoes as leader of the charge. Robert Hawkins uses his satellite uplink to track New Bern’s movements, but he is forced to disconnect when the unknown enemy tracks his signal. Before he disconnects, Hawkins sees that New Bern is sending a train with three cars full of soldiers to attack Jericho from one angle while foot soldiers attack on another. He takes the tank – knowing there is no ammo – to the location, perhaps to put it on the train tracks and stop the locomotive.

Meanwhile, Heather - injured during her escape from New Bern - wakes up in a combat infirmary. She steps outside to find troops organizing for battle. She tells the colonel in charge about the battle between Jericho and New Bern, but he doesn’t care – until he tells his superiors via satellite uplink. Bald Bad Boy Valente – Homeland Security man who supervised Hawkins’ undercover unit – tells them to redirect forces to Kansas, secure the area and find the “terrorist” who was tracked to that vicinity. Heather is disarmed when she sees a new American flag flying on the pole before she is whisked away to Wyoming, where the new government resides.

The end shows Hawkins on the tank, watching the train, as choppers move in, and Jericho residents readying themselves to fire. The screen goes black as the shooting begins.

This final episode moved at a snail’s pace and offered little in creative development. Tension fizzled with flashbacks to the wedding of April and Eric six years ago. Certainly, this showed the tension within the Green family, but took far too much away from the ensuing battle. Sadly, it is not surprising that the finale of a show was lame. Despite great acting, the show has never generated excitement and enthusiasm. This finale reflected the series’ half-hearted attempts at plot, tension and unique characters.

The CBS press site touts this as the first season finale for the drama, but at press time, I have not seen evidence of a follow up. That might just be a good thing.
