Legend of the Bog

Ireland is ripe with legends and mysteries that draw all sorts of people into their lush regions. We don’t get to see much of that in this one.

On a typical day in Ireland a 2000-year-old “Bog Body” manages to come back to life and begin his prowl through the bogs. Enter a handsome and charming archeologist (token handsome guy, Jason Barry) and his not so happy pretty young driver (Nora-Jane Noone), a pair of young pretty girls (Amy Huberman and Olga Wehlrty) who have no business being in the bog, a business woman (Shelly Goldstein)  who is hell-bent on building houses in the bog who is dragging her reluctant taxi driver (Gavin Kelty) along in the wake of her crappy attitude, and a gaggle of other unfortunate victims.

Now you’ve got yourself one heck of a big body count and a really bad Irish horror flick.

I wanted to write up a brilliant description of this film and dazzle you with my prose, but this is just a typical movie where lots of people get killed by a very poorly portrayed bog man. The characters in this film are incredibly stupid. The cast may be comprised of talented actors, but the writing and the actions are less than stellar.

When each of the pairs gets lost on their own they all end up finding each other at the cabin of a bog hunter, Mr. Hunter to you (Vinnie Jones) who has the personality of a pit bull on steroids. During their night at the cabin we spend over an hour listening to them argue, yell at each other, and complain about everything. The good news is, each of them has a story to tell, the bad news is most of them are the same story.

Then there is the Bog Man (Adam Fogerty) who wanders through the countryside killing people and animals and basically acting ridiculous. Did I mention ridiculous? Whatever happened to horror flicks that kept you on the edge of your sea wondering what would happen next? I long for the days when chilling music preceded an action that made you jump in your seat and grab your partner’s knee in fright.

Legend of the Bog is more like a suicide pact than anything because everyone refuses to do what they should and has to wander off on their own so they can get killed. Can you guess who gets out alive?
