“I laughed a lot while watching this....”
After a bit of procrastination, I sat down and watched these episodes of Lil’ Bush. Although not my favorite animated comedy (I tend to prefer stuff like Frisky Dingo and Aqua Teen Hunger Force), I did really enjoy most of it, and laughed quite a bit. I’m not sure why I kept putting it off, really. Most likely because, admittedly, political humor isn’t my favorite type of comedy. Although South Park can get pretty political, and I can’t get enough of that. And I really like The Daily Show as well. Hmmph. I dunno.
Regardless, Lil Bush isn’t overly political. Sure the characters and settings are obviously set in the world of politics, but the situations, and much of the humor, are mined more from the show’s other influence: Kid’s cartoons from the 80’s, like Muppet Babies and Tiny Toons. Lil’ Bush and his buddies (including Lil’ Condy and Lil’ Cheney) even get out their musical instruments and rock out to better illustrate their points. Very much a spoof of 80’s cartoons. And much of the humor here is death and toilet humor, stuff that could be written into any adult cartoon. The characters are just an interesting framework to hang the jokes on. Okay, yeah, there are political references and storylines here and there, but you won’t need to watch hours of CNN before checking this out in order to enjoy it. A healthy dissatisfaction with how the country is currently being run helps as well.
Written and dircted by former Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons scribes, Lil’ Bush is great fun if you like your humor raunchy and a bit rough around the edges. There are only six episodes here (each episode is split into two ten-minute or so stories), plus a bonus, unaired episode, as well as some behind-the-scenes stuff.
I laughed a lot while watching this, after not knowing what to expect. Just wait until you see the one where Barbara Bush tries to seduce Lil’ Cheney. Oh, man… that’s horrible. Hilarious, though.
