LOST pulses toward the season finale in high speed momentum.
The Oceanic Six land back in civilization and we finally see friends and family greet them, as do surprising ghosts and a crew of media. We know they land, but how did they get there? They tell an agreed upon tale and act their parts hauntingly well. As Sun poignantly states, “We are in shock, Jack.” They reacquaint with their families right away. Was it just me or does Jack’s mom look like an older version of Kate?
Baby Aaron, of course, did a superb job looking cute in Sawyer’s and Kate’s arms both in and out of the jungle. He did a great job brushing paths with his grandmother and creating tension when Jack discovers Claire was his sister. Yes, hello, Uncle Jack.
This episode is filled with the characteristic eeriness, unexpected human connections, and humor of all the great LOST episodes. Hurley’s parents cracked me up with: “Jesus Christ is not a weapon.” The Oceanic Six learn who they are now in the eyes of the rest of the world and begin to feel their way through the world at large. At the same time, we learn more about how they got off the island through the intense struggle with Widmore’s men and Ben’s antics at the Orchid. As the episode progresses however, the Oceanic Six are dispersed farther away from each other, leaving you to wonder, “How do they get off together?” This is suspense writing at its best and the musical score by Michael Giacchino gave me chills.
The biggest kudos goes out to actress Yunjin Kim for Sun’s confrontation with her father. She takes the Oceanic Six settlement (I guess we know now where convict Kate got her muey moolah) and buys a controlling interest in her father’s company. The look on her father’s face: priceless. Sun’s composure blended with the under current of seething anger made the season for me as her character came full circle. In addition, she reveals that one other is responsible for her husband’s death. Does she mean Widmore or Ben? Jack perhaps? Her wealth and the wealth of the other passengers leaves us wondering if the Oceanic Six could return to the Island as a formidable competitor of Widmore and a fierce adversary of the Island itself? What kind of riches would it take to tackle an otherworldly beast?
