LOST (5.12) - Some Like It Hoth

Some Like It Hoth leads LOST fans through chills and belly laughs.

True to Daniel Faraday’s predictions during the nosebleed era, Miles has spent time on the Island. In fact, we see him in the beginning scene of this entire season though we’ve no idea the infant is none other than the communicator with the dead. Now, however, we are coming full circle and getting answers few could have predicted. At least I was caught off guard until just before Mile’s mother told him, “Your father died a long time ago.” Then I began to put a few pieces into place with a flourish. I love that feeling—when a show completely surprises you yet leads you down a train of thought to a conclusion.

While dealing with the personal revelations of life in Dharma, Miles also makes a few startling discoveries about the nature of Dharma. They are not the altruistic scientists we have come to know this season. Instead, they are shooting their own people in the back to do some sort of secret experiments. The plot becomes more entangled, the characters more in danger, and the mysteries more alluring. I really want to know what is in the shadow of the statue. Perhaps the wheel John turned to get off the Island.

Hurley balances out the moments of fear with a steady round of laughs. Only he, or let’s say the writers who lead him along, could think to compare Miles’ journey with that of Luke Skywalker. As a true Star Wars fan who has actually gotten her children up early on Sunday morning to watch Star Wars before church, I loved the references, but did see one problem. Luke was truly a good guy and Miles was, well, more like Han Solo. Give him his money and he’s off to find Jabba the Hut. Or is he? With Hurley leading Miles through Dharma Karma, the disturbed listener of the dead may just uproot hisdeepest beliefs about himself. He will discover his father did love him after all. My husband theorizes that Miles himself will tell his father that the Dharma people will all be killed by Ben and Dr. Video will send his family away to save them. I think it’s a good call. Maybe our Han will find his own non-monetary reason to go back and fight the Emperor.

That person didn’t get shot. The magnetic field yanked a filling out of his mouth thru his head.

E.M. Effingham

You called it, Marty. I went back and watched it and you’re right. He wasn’t shot as I too quickly assumed. The cover up isn’t as vindictive as previously thought, though still suspicious.  Thanks for the comment and keeping me on my toes. Yours, Em.
